You could almost accept them doing unrequested work without notice if it didn't extend your shop schedule and was totally warranty.  Almost.  I'd still want a heads up for anything more than a minor parts swap or adjustment.

But to do a chargeable job completely on their own is untenable.  I'd have gone ballistic.

And to take it upon himself to change the weight of the fluid in Traxxion forks??  I'd be beyond control.....

They didn't have a clue what they were working on.  Until they opened (if they actually opened) the fork they didn't know they were in to anything different.  Than rather than admitting a mistake they do the unfortunately expected thing and fake it.  Buttoning it up acting like it was nothing new and no problem.  Then charging you for the pleasure.

I'd have asked them who they called for service approval, who they called for servicing instructions, how they knew the oil was correct and once they got through wiping the dumb look off their face then would have asked them who in the A/P department to bill for doing the damned job over again with someone who actually knew what the hell they were doing.

They waived the charge on that service for good will. I guess that makes it good in their mind, not mine. :sauer005: :sauer024:

The dealer to English translation on that "good will" service would be:  "Oops, got in to something here we don't know chit about.  Better not charge him for it and if we're lucky it won't come back to bite us in the ass."

That's even more highly classified than the PALS codes or nuclear launch orders in the Presidential football.  Anyone who actually sees this book is chased down by Willie G zombie clones; and eaten.  Since dealership service departments actually cast runes as a diagnostic tool, however, once in a great while a small stone gets accidentally dropped in a saddlebag.  The few words gleaned from those runes are the only bits and pieces we, the common rider, ever have of the existence of the Translation Matrix.

Don-

When are you going to do yours and give us (me) a step by step with pictures???
I can change the lowers and replace the seals but that is the extent of my fork knowledge.
Do we actually disassemble the cartridge also?
Why don't we just change the fluid if we have no leaks?
Any input appreciated.  Thanks, bob

Regarding Rooster's leak, was probably just the grease from the steering neck.

Haven't been in it yet Bob so hesitatant to say for sure.  Sure as hell I act like I know what I'm talking about and there will be some little surprise.

The guys at TD suggest a task of more than just a fluid change, it seems, to make sure the installed valve is clear and clean.  A thorough review of the internals.  Unlike the stock suspension there is actually something to at least partially occlude there.

HD Dude is a dealer for TD and does these installs.  So he's quite likely had hands-on for later servicing also.  With any luck he'll see this and report what to expect, look for and what is common to the task.

I was starting to think we could just drain the fluid out, measure it, and add new.

Not having and problems and no leaks (knock wood)..

Boatman could be right as last season I had them add more grease. I didn't notice any leaks and I should have if there was any since I wash regularly. And it wasn't that long ago I had my head down in that area taking off and reinstalling the front of fairing. And Jim installed them for me so at least I know they went in right.

Here is a picture of an AK-20 cartridge/upper fork tube removed from my 2005 and a picture of a upper tube and dampner rod I picked up used locally that I am putting back in the 05 to trade the bike in.   Both upper tubes are the same length and I used 54614-05 Profile low touring springs/dampners for conventional forks (Traxxion returned the old dampners/springs but I sold them on Ebay figureing I wouldn't need them).
I thought the SEEG's came lowered and you can see that Traxxion put in the stock Electraglide cartridges (and I am glad they did) but I always thought the front end was still lowered with the AK20's..   It wasn't.

I picked up new bushings but the old looked the same as the new to me (coatings and all).  The Maxima oil from Traxxion was in for over 30,000 miles and came out nice and torquoise colored.

Once you have the Traxxions installed in the upper tubes, you can't use the upper tubes and put back in original parts as Traxxion cuts out the bottom end of the tube.

Here's the fork holder a guy makes and sells on Ebay.  Worked great but handly people could have used/made items they had around the house for less.  Same thing with the seal driver.  Bought a nice driver from George's Garage that works great but a lot of people use PCV pipe to drive the bushings/seal home.
