Traxxion AK-20 Service
« on: October 09, 2008, 12:40:08 PM »

Hey gang. Some of you, like myself, might be at, or approaching the mileage where you need to start thinking about service for your Traxxion AK-20 equipped front ends. If you're not aware of it, the service requirements are completely different than what you're used to on conventional hydraulic forks. This work must be done by Traxxion, or an authorized Traxxion shop, who has the expertise to work on this type of suspension component. Therefore, I've started this thread to:

1. Allow you to better understand the Service Requirements of an AK-20 equipped front end
2. Understand your options to perform this service
3. Understand the costs to perform this service
4. Show you what Traxxion's participation will be to help us in our Service Requirements

Below is Traxxion's response to me after reaching out to discuss our service options. I'll be removing my front fork legs as my bike's in the shop right now. I'll be sending mine to them for service. Jim's (HD Dude) shop-Metal Dragon in CA is also an authorize Traxxion installer who will be capable of handling this for you as well. If there are other authorized outlets I'm sure we'll hear of them here too! Thanks for reading this. Hope it helps your understanding of your Service Requirements.

Hey Howie!

How have you been?

Our fork service includes complete disassembly, inspection of all parts, checking fork tubes for straightness, polishing upper fork tubes, replacing seals, inspecting bushings and replacing any that show any wear, disassembly of AK20 cartridges, disassembly of valving in AK20s for cleaning and inspection, fresh oil, etc. It's basically the same as the "race prep" we do for race bikes.

We charge $150 for the labor, $25 for the seals, and $15 each for bushings, (0-4 may be needed). That would be "forks off the bike" if you bring us the bike, we charge another $150 to r/r the forks.

I can give you 10% off that service. You can go ahead and post that as a group buy discount if you like. It's not a huge discount, but we are so thorough with our AK20s, (they are our babies so we want them to work right  :grin2: ) we don't really make a lot on the service. Normally we charge an  extra $75 to service a cartridge.

Now is a good time to send them in, all the racer stuff starts showing up Jan 1st.

Regards,
Dan

Great time for winter work now gang! I just sent my fork legs down to Traxxion for the 25K service on my AK-20's. Dan's setup for this work right now, but they get busy with their racing customers after the first of the year. Thought I'd give ya'll a reminder in case anyone else plans on doing their Traxxion service this winter! ;)

As well as us.  We also do our own forks.  Eric Gray (GMD Computrac, Fort Lauderdale) and Max use to work together in Atlanta when they were mere bucks.

These guys at Traxxion are awesome! I shipped my fork legs to them for the 25K service just before I left for Mexico, on the 4th. I just spoke to Dan. They're already done and on their way back to Vern. Around 200 bucks including shipping! Fair price and great turnaround guys! Thanks Traxxion!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Great stuff, Howie.  Looking forward to your report on how they perform after the service.
I have the servicing kit, but:
1)  I'm like 10K miles into my new forks.
2)  That's a metric chitload of work.   :2vrolijk_21:

Has anyone serviced their AK-20's by themselves without sending the forks back to Traxxion??
I think 2Lane is going to do his this winter and Henry has bought the kit from Traxxion.
If anyone has done the service or disassembly of the forks, any help/tips appreciated as I am at just over 30K on mine.  If no one has done it themselves, I will probably send back to Traxxion after Thanksgiving.

I just picked up my bike from the dealer and they claimed my fork seals were leaking so they said they fixed them. They didn't even call me first. The tech said he put in HD's lightest oil back in. So far they seem ok, hope they did the service correct. :nixweiss:

The dealer took your Traxxion front forks apart and replaced the seals without even a phone call??  That is beyond incredible.  I would be insane pissed...   :sauer024:

You could almost accept them doing unrequested work without notice if it didn't extend your shop schedule and was totally warranty.  Almost.  I'd still want a heads up for anything more than a minor parts swap or adjustment.

But to do a chargeable job completely on their own is untenable.  I'd have gone ballistic.

I was surprised to say the least. The same tech told me he put in lighter oil than what was in there when I asked. :nixweiss: I don't think he will be touching my bike again. I need to buy a trailer so I can just haul it to Jim when needed.
