JR's Nana Isn't Sick Anymore
« on: October 11, 2008, 08:37:07 PM »

WaaaaHoooo! :bananarock:

For those of you at MV that were trying to diagnose what was wrong with my Lil Nana I want to thank you! :2vrolijk_21:

I was experiencing a cutout when getting near full throttle. I had no codes. Just picked up my scooter before I left for MV having it's 30,000 service. Was getting off an exit in Chattanooga to get fuel and went to open it up and it fell on it's face like I was running out of fuel. My first thought was I was low on fuel but it only took 3.5 gallons. It ran good until I just about gave it full throttle.

With the gas situation the way it was I was wondering if I got some bad fuel. Made our way into MV and it wasn't that bad. As I was riding in the next couple of days I noticed it was more noticeable being in the mountains and trying to keep up with the gang. I was getting frustrated as it would stumble up the mountains.

The night before I was coming home so many were offering their help. Tried 2 different sets of plugs and still would do it. Bubba trailered his Ultra and offered to let me ride his home and he would trailer mine. I thought once I got out of the mountains I would be alright.

We left out that morning and it was getting worse! I got to the other side of Knoxville and had enough. I called Bubba and he was 10 minutes behind us. He came to the rescue and I was able to get my nana to the house and enjoyed riding Bubba's sweet ride. Man, I owe ya big time bubba! :2vrolijk_21:

When we stopped to eat Bubba said he would bet it's the fuel filter. I agreed, I work on Caterpillar equipment and they will do the same thing. Called the dealer Monday and was seeing when I could get it in. They said the 10th of Oct. I told them I would do it myself since that wouldn't be covered under warranty anyway. I asked them when is the filter due for service. They told me 40-50,000 mile. I thought that didn't seem right.

Picked up parts and got to the house, I was looking what was involved in replacing the filter and saw that it should be replaced at 25,000 service. I pulled up my service records and of course it wasn't replaced! I called the dealer and told them if they would have replaced it at the time of service it called for I wouldn't of had that problem on my trip! They were going to install it since I already paid for that service. They agreed to do it. That way if it was something else, warranty should cover it!

Got it back yesterday....man, it runs like a scalded ape!!! :huepfenjump3: :bananarock: ;D I also noticed no pinging.

Just wanted to pass it on to those that were interested and say Thanks! I love this place and love ya'll! God Bless!

Your local dealers charge would be a bit cheaper than my service call!!! :huepfenlol2: But it would be fun! :2vrolijk_21:

JR, what excuse did the dealer use for not replacing it?  Was it Bumpus again?  Glad your Nana is healthy again.

They said they haven't had any problems with the filters and they use to be due at 50,000 mile. The service manager at the time of service didn't see the need since they haven't seen any problems before. I told them when I bring my bike in I want them to service everything the service calls for. I also have them replace plugs every 5,000 even though it's due at 10,000. Brian Rose is the only mechanic I want to work on my bike. He left Bumpus to go to Southern Thunder the day I brought my bike in for 25,000 service. He has since came back. I was going out of town and when I got back in I was taking a trip so I didn't have a choice. I had gotten a call from the GM and as usual they made it right.

By the way, same thing with MJZ's problem, they made it right and he is happy! Bumpus is alright, it is hard to find good mechanics. For me, if they ever screwed up, they made it right. Plus, I feel like family there.

More than likely it was not just the filter but the fuel line inside the tank as well. The filter comes with a new line as they most often wear holes in them from vibrating inside the tank. I wouls saw that about 80% of the filters that at change at the 25k mark also have holes in the fuel line which decreases the fuel pressure at the injectors. This decrease in pressure will throw the whole map off, especially at upper rpms.

Hey Jim! :drink:

I looked over the old hose and didn't see any holes. Someone mentioned that in MV. I think it was Don or Randy. Now you got me curious, may need to run a leakage test on hose! ;D Anyway, sure is running great now! :bananarock:

BTW Jim, did you find out what was wrong with my light?

I thought of this problem when I read JR say his dealer told him they experience no filter issues - so there was no need to change the filter at the specified service interval - even though they still charged him for it.  This is a fairly common problem - suprising they would not be aware of it. :nixweiss:

Its easy to test, hold you finger over one end and blow into the other......Did they replace both hoses in the tank or just the one from the filter to the pickup (that one comes with the filter) The second hose is the high pressure from the regulator to the tank fitting.

I have the light, will test it Monday and let you know.

Jim

They did not charge me for the filter, but the 25,000 service is flat rated labor which should have included filter change. That's why I said I already paid for it. My guess is it saved them 1/2 hour or so in labor. I work at a Cat dealer and if a filter is due for service at a certain amount of hours we change it. I told the GM if your going to alter maintainence intervals it should be sooner than later!

I was wondering that myself, I will ask but I doubt it. I only saw the one hose and filter in my box of replaced parts.

Precisely - if it was called for at the service interval - you paid for it as part of the cost of the service.  If they don't do some portion of the service called for, and don't reduce the price of the service - you paid for something you didn't get...   ???

My grandfather always drove Cadillacs.  Way back in the late sixties or early seventies, they eliminated grease fittings on Cadillacs and went to lifetime grease bearings.  My grandfather took his car to the dealership for service religiously - and kept every receipt.  After several years of paying to have the car " chassis greased" as part of the service - a mechanic told him there were no fittings to grease - that the car had lifetime grease bearings in the chassis.  My grandfather - who lived thru the depression -  took about 3 years of receipts  - which had a line item for "chassis grease" back to the dealership and demanded he be reimbursed for the "chassis grease" that he never received.

That's great! :2vrolijk_21: Sounds like me. I keep all my receipts in folders. I am very anal when I work on something. If I remove a clamp or a tie strap, it goes back. I can't stand shoddy work! Even though I work on heavy equipment I always take pride in what I do! The customer is paying a premium price for my service and I try to give him his money worth. I would love to do my own work on my scooter but find it difficult to do with the hours I work. When I'm off, I wanna ride! Amen?

Brian Rose is an excellent mechanic at Bumpus. I have total confidence in his work. What I worry about is everyone else sees that and he is always covered up. This can make him rush to finish and miss something. I learned this lesson myself, and explained it to my customers and most are willing to wait for my services.
