First Service - What's the going cost and what's not included
« on: October 12, 2008, 01:57:59 AM »

Just wondering what the rest of you have paid for the first service and if there were any unexpected charges. I picked up my SERG a few days ago after the 1600km (1000M) service. The charge was $385 Canadian( $330 US). Is this about the going rate. Also I was charged for some seals (behind the air filter and on the clutch). It was only a few $$ but shouldn't all that be covered under the warranty?

I paid 200 euro ($287) for mine and I brought my own oil and didn't pay sales tax otherwise it would have been 280 euro ($400).  If I have another service done here in Germany, I'll bring my own oil filter too so I don't have to drop 20 euros ($30) for a $14 filter.

I would expect that you would be charged for 3 O-rings for the drain plugs, a gasket for the clutch inspection cover, an oil filter, and several quarts of fluid.  The clutch inspection (derby) cover gasket really doesn't need to be changed each time you change primary oil if you're careful and don't damage it, but most dealerships will in fact change it automatically.  If you do your own changes in the future, you probably won't need that gasket.  I have no idea what seal they would be changing behind the air filter.  As far as I know, there is no reason to remove the filter at 1k miles unless there was an unusually heavy dust storm in the shipping crate. :nixweiss:

When I stop at dealerships I usually look at their service price boards, and what I've seen indicates that most dealers in this area seem to be in the $300 - $400 USD range for the 1k service.  I've also noticed that most places haven't adjusted their prices downward after Harley reduced the maintenance requirements.  For instance, there is no longer a primary chain adjustment, and the primary and trans fluid change intervals have been extended after the initial change at 1k.  I'm sure that is just an oversight and most dealers will be adjusting their prices downward when they figure it out.  ???

I pulled my copy of the service paperwork and this is what they charged me for:

Clutch Cover Gasket                      11.68 euro  ($16.76)
Inspection Cover Gasket                  5.80 euro  ($8.32)
HD oil filter                                  20.92 euro  ($30)
small articles/expendable material      4.37 euro  ($6.27)
shop time                                  156.60 euro  (224.72)

If you add the cost of the oil on, then we paid about the same.

Welcome to europe!

I love it here...one of the few places I know of where I can get on the autobahn and legally ride my SERK like it was built to without having to worry about getting pulled over.

The dealer where I bought the SERG included the labor for the first 1000 mi service. Said I would have to pay for the fluids....Haven't gone yet, but I will take my own oil and filter; and will let them change it out.

I bought my last harley (97 Fatboy) at the same dealer when I bought my SERG. Alot have changed in the past 12 years. Back then they did include the first service at no charge. Now nothing is "free". Even the 10% discount on parts they used to include is gone. There is another dealer in the area that included the first years service for an extra $1500. This was part of their price, no way of getting around it. It might be a good deal for anyone who does alot of miles in the first year and is nearby where the service is needed.
