Expired registration
« on: October 13, 2008, 01:36:09 PM »

Bought the bike in the last weekend of Jan 07, was registered by the dealer.  Finally rode it in April 07 for the 1st time.  Riding with my brother in law yesterday.  He was a good ways behind me when we passed a town cop with someone pulled over.  When I passed, trooper pulled out and blocked traffic so the car he had pulled over could enter traffic.  I turned on my 4 ways and went to the shoulder to allow the car and trooper to pass so my Bro in law could join me again.  Cop pulled in behind me and turned lights on.  Asked for license and registration and wanted to know why I pulled over.  I told him he cut off my riding buddy and I was trying to get us back together.  He ran my registration and it came up expired (4/07).  I've got 11,000 miles, almost every mile I've ridden, on an EXPIRED REGISTRATION.  I told him I never check the sticker and rely on the DMV to send the renewal in the mail.  My only guess is that my registration renewal wasn't mailed since the DMV received mine from the dealer as the mailing window expired.  Every mile I've put on the bike in the last 18 months has been without a vaild registration.

He let me off with a warning telling me he was doing me a huge favor since the fine doubles every 3 months.   :vrolijk27:  I went directly to my brother's house a short distance away to register online.  Couldn't do it, said I had to go in person.  I hope I only get charged for the current registration and not, somehow, the 18 months I wasn't registered.  CHECK YOUR STICKERS EVERYONE!

All bikes in NYS renew in April, Jim, no matter when you register it. Every April is MC renewal time here!!! If you register it now, you'll need to renew in April again.

That's precisely what I suspected.  He told me motorcycles need to be re-registered in person, that the DMV doesn't mail renewals.  I respectfully disagreed.  I think I missed the reminder since it was so close to the mailing time (feb?)

That's not true. They mail out renewals, and you can do it online. Yours is expired now so you have to go in person. For some reason you never got a renewal last year. Maybe the dealer screwed up the original regi. Now ya know, bikes are every April, like DST!!! ;D

I strongly suspect you are a registration scofflaw & as such may need to be sent to jail Scofflaw re-education seminars for an indeterminate period of time.   ;)   :huepfenlol2:

In my neighborhood, our mail goes to other houses & we get other peoples mail a lot.  It all seems to work out, except for stuff we never get that we don't know about anyway. :nixweiss:

Our registration renewal is on our birthday. They do not send a cake in the mail however.   :confused5:

All JW would have had to do is show the officer the "NFL cheerleaders" thread and all would have been forgiven too.

Ours go by beginning letter of last name.

I was stopped for the same reason once in a car...the renewal notice never got to me, and it was about 6 months over.  It cost me...hope they cut you a break JW.  Who looks at their sticker?  I depend on the reminders and do it all on line.

If you can prove you are current here all you have to do is pay a court cost, as I remember.  If you leave the registration on your desk & it's not in/on the vehicle, that is.  No need to ask me how I know this.....
