sert vs. power commander
« on: October 14, 2008, 03:39:02 PM »

I'm tired of fighting the heat on my 07 SEUC and am about ready to have a sert or power commander and more air installed.  Local HD dealer says he will do either but sm likes power commander better.  I'm not thrilled with the one on my 03' Heritage and had one on my '06 Ultra and it was so bad I yanked it off and had a local independent unlock and tune it.   Have had no experience with a sert although I think it's the same principle as what the guy did on my '06 except it's a HD system.  Can anyone please give me a recommendation?  Thanks.

I would recommend talking to the person (if that is not you) that is going to tune your bike and ask what they prefer. More then likely the one they prefer will be the one they get the best tune out of for your bike.

I agree with Dood it is about your tuner if he's more skilled with a PC or a SERT.

One of the best Power Commander tuner's around is John Golden in Joplin, Missouri.  You can bunk with Twola Nerider!   :2vrolijk_21:

The results of both devices are comparable, if the job is done right. The new Super SERT may be tuned without a Dyno-type stand, while the Power Commander is best tuned on an actual Dynojet stand. Does your dealer have a Dyno stand? If yes, I'd go with the dealer recommendation. If no, they should not offer a Power Commander, and you should go the with SERT. If you have no confidence in the dealer (actually when tuning is performed on the Dyno stand you get a print-out of the performance, so you can be quite certain of the results) you should visit another H-D dealer (for the SERT) or a Dynojet reseller in your area (try www.dynojet.com to find one) and check them out. Also: I believe there was a very good post on this website a while a go, with a list of questions to ask your tuner ...

Ride safely,
Louis

Willing to make a weekend trip and be certain it's done right?  You're about 350 miles from one of the best Power Commander tuners anywhere in the country.  Ride to Joplin, MO for a Saturday afternoon appointment and ride home on Sunday.

I recently had the same decision to make concerning PC vs SERT. We put my 2003 SERK on the Dyno with the PC installed as purchased. Found the tuning was not good. Appears only one cylinder was tuned. The other running very rich. The PC was an older model. The end result was to go with my tuners recommendation and installed a "Direct Link" which is almost same as SERT but less expensive. I picked up 10 hp and mileage went from 34.5 to well over 40 mpg. It boils down to a personal choice but I did not like the PC and am glad that I made the swap to a unit that offers finer tuning. When on trips, I carry a memory stick with both the Direct Link program and my personal tune loaded. If I encounter problems on the road my data is available for use by the closest shop.

You may also take a look into Mastertune from TTS. The SERT was owned, designed and manufactured by TTS and anyone who can use the SERT can do Mastertune, with the added features of Mastertune you can event do it yourself with the autotune feature called V-Tune that's included with the product.

Thanks to all for your advice.  Plasaman, I had a very similiar experience with my '06 Ultra, we took pc off and got the direct link download and what a difference it made, exactly as you described.  That's why I'm leaning toward a sert.  However, because of all the 110 issues I bought the extended warranty so in order to protect that I'll need to go along with what my HD sm is willing to do too.

Thanks again.

John Golden is 370 miles from Western Kentucky.  Can anyone recommend a qualified PC Tuner a little closer to home?  Anyone familiar with HDT Cycles in Dyersburg TN?
