103 or 110??
« on: October 19, 2008, 10:20:30 PM »

After hearing all the talk going around, I'm wondering how many people think the 103" is better than the 110", and if so, why? Thanks

The 103s did not fall from the sky like a herd of seagulls passing through the gaseous stream of a pterodactyl that just ate a Taco Bell.

From what engine? 88" or 96"
88" will require a new crank to go to 103 and cutting the cases to go to 110
96" is just new barrels to go to 103 and also case cutting to go to 110

Personally if it were me and your going to crack the cases put a 113" in it. Stay away from the 110"

A well built 113" will get horse power #'s into the 130's and torque #'s in the mid 120's without any reliability concerns.

Knock on wood I have 28,000 miles on a 110 and have done just one set of head gaskets at about 17,000 So I can't complain about the 110. Although it was a dealer built motor vs a factory built motor. Can't comment on the 103 I've never had one, but I've sure beat a few of them.

if you mean reliabilty of stock cvo 103 versus cvo 110, 103 wins hands down...if you mean a build from 96, go 106 without splitting cases...if you have the extra few grand to split cases, etc, bypass 110 for 117, 117 is about the same cost for 7 more cubes!

You can also go from a 96 to a 107 without splitting cases.  :2vrolijk_21: An important note to keep in mind here is that when you get up over the 100-110 hp range the stock crank becomes a very weak link, you also need to be prepared do do the Timken bearing conversion.

I've been very happy with my 96" to 103" conversion on my 07 Road Glide. I've also had two CVO 103's and one of them is still running strong as a bull and solid as a swiss watch in Memphis. The other one died a premature death when I crashed the motorcycle it was in outside of Toronto in June of 05. The wreck was sold at auction and may still be running, I don't know. It was a solid engine that I put 22,000 miles on without a single problem. Anyway, on my 07 RG, I went with all H-D Screamin Eagle parts including the SERT and the older style SE Mufflers that are no longer available. The engine makes good strong useable, relable power. I know the quest for bigger better faster more is constant and hard to resist, but I'd have to see years of rock solid reports to recommend anything H-D makes larger than a 103. Once you get out into the aftermarket it's any man's game, but sticking strictly to H-D, I personally cannot overstate the case for going with a 103.

I had no issues with the 103 it ran well and with just cam, sert and exhaust changes and made real good power. But why keep a good thing so I made my 113 and love it best H-D motor I've had yet.

the 106" I mentioned is the same one that most folks call 107"...a 3&15/16 inch bore that can be done to stock cylinders...if only someone offered a cast piston for them they'd definitely be a better value than 103"/cast...we hear so much about the timken/welded crank fix, and I wonder how many failures there have actually been with riders who don't lug, holeshot or burnout and always smoothly load/unload the powertrain?...got 40k miles out of my 105hp/115tq 103" without "the fix" and my current 115hp/115tq 110" stock bottom end has 8500 miles and is smooth as glass

Well, when they came out with the new trike (TriGlide), the MoCo built it with a 103 instead of a 110, so what does that tell you?

AZSSE,

103,107,113

Still have two 103's and they both are and have been problem free.   If it were me and I had the choice of building a motor up I would most likely look to the 103 or 107 as the platform from a 96".   Michelle's 04 pumpkin has 46k miles on it and the bike has been trouble free for 5 years.   Our 05 103 Cherry no issues to date with it or the first one that I totalled.  My 03 S/B Ultra had a 103 in it and had 32k miles on it and again trouble free.

My 07 110,

5 head leaks, cylinders replaced, cam compartment replaced after 2 lifters failed.

For me and my own personal track record with the 110, as well as all the issues documented here on the site by everyone else says to me the 103 is a winner.   There are only 2 problems that were really seen with the 103 engine and those were cam shoes and some cranks were found to be out of balance.   The cam shoe issue is gone with the new cam setup and the cranks imho have only gotten cheaper and worse with the 07 and later models.

Is that why your trying to buy an 09  RubyRed SEUC?

Chip,

You hit the nail on the head when you posted all those  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

The guy asked
Quote

I gave him an answer based on my own experience with them.

That said, you have no idea how much I am praying the issues are resolved with the 110 motor.  The new 09's offer a few things I had really wanted on the 07 and well the color really caught my eye.   If the issues remain, I will suck it up and follow in Ken's foot steps and rip the motor out.   It really sucks that I may have to throw 10 grand extra at it to get what I want, but so be it if that is the way it plays out.
