Air Filter Rain Cover
« on: October 25, 2008, 10:42:18 AM »

My '09 SERG came w/ a slip on rain cover. Never had one before. What's the purpose of it? Is it to keep water out of the intake or to protect the stock filter element or something else? Thanks.

I have one also, I think it more for looks than anything else.
I don't think its going to stop the rain at 60..

Before you blow it off as just cosmetic, try holding it on your hand and running water from a faucet or hose on it.  You may just be surprised at how much of the water rolls off versus coming through on your hand.  The good rain socks are treated to repel water while still allowing air flow.  I don't know anything about the one Harley provides, but since I doubt they want to repair/replace engines that their filter allowed water into, I'll bet they included a decent version.

I would install it or cover the filter with a plastic bag when washing the bike also.  Really messes up your day if you fill a cylinder with water and then crank the engine over.

Well Jerry.....guess who got sucked in and stuck the rain bonnet under the faucet?  Hand damp, but no actual water droplets.....

One thing to keep in mind with rain socks.  At least those few I've had to mess with in years past are consumable items.  They lose their effectiveness over time and use.  So y'll might be buying a new one at the beginning of every other riding season (or whenever).

JMS,

Your theory doesn't hold water  NO PUN INTENDED, I rode from Memphis to St Louis in some of the worst rain I've seen next to a guy on an 03 duece with the heavy breather. The rain sock did exactly what it was suposed to at 60 mph it kept the water out and the bike ran fine. I would have never have guessed this but it sure as hell made a believer out of me.

I rode my CVO Springer with the heavy breather in some heavy rain with the rain sock and it worked as expected...no problems whatsoever.

maybe I'm wrong... I just dont want to carry that thing around in my jacket.

So I will do my best to avoid the rain, pull over and have a beer.

Mine is on all the time because we get four seasons in a day here sometimes and I don't want to be pissing around taking it on and off. Over five thousand kms and some of those in some really heavy rain and no problems. Will be interesting to see how it holds up through the summer here though with UV rays beating on it all season etc.

Talked to a friend last evening who handles the dyno work on all my bikes.  Can't remember how, but the conversation came around to the SE Rain Cover.  He had a client that was concerned about a reduction in power with the cover on.  They ran it up with the cover on and off with no recordable difference in numbers.  Put my on and leaving it on.
