MOCO can't even make two parts that match. My Transmission and Engine are about 5 shades different. I bought some touch paint and it is so far off I had to mix it with some Blck Pearl to get it somewhat close. Good Luck but I don't see a chance in Hell this process working!

Yes, the moco can choose to repair or replace, but it still has to be done right.

If they can't get it done right then they are defaulting on your warranty.

I've read on the Roadglide forum the 2011s are starting to peel and the MOCO's solution: Touch Up Paint!!! so since 2008 nothing has changed regarding this defect, won't be much of a surprise to most though. :nervous:

This will become precedent (he says with only half-hearted facete).  Once they've learned this flies with the paint on engines the same procedure will be applied to tanks and fenders...

I have an update and what looks like some good news.  I stopped by my local dealer last week on the way to a business meeting.  Just so happens that the area service rep from MOCO was there at the same time.  The service manager had her come out to see the bike.  She noted that the paint was only peeling off the motor and transmission cases, nowhere else.  She also noted that there was no other sign of corrosion on the bike.  She seemed surprised to find out that I had over 23K miles on the bike in one year.  She took photos and said she would lobby her case to have the cases replaced.

I got a call this morning from the service mgr who told me that MOCO has now decided to replace the engine cases AND the transmission cases under warranty.  We will schedule it over the winter.  50+ hours of work for them and satisfaction for me.  I might even be a good time to put in those new cams!

So, after all the push back from MOCO, having the area service rep put eyes on the problem seemed to work for me.  I will continue to dig around to find out why this occured from a manufacturing perspective and how frequent of a problem it is for the CVOs.

Thanks for the support of the group!

I have a 09 Classic and the paint is coming off my starter. MoCo said bring it in and they would patch paint it on the bike. They wern't prepared to take it off. Was not happy with that so buy the time I drive 100 miles in and drop bike off and come home and back again I just decided to buy some chrome covers.

Fixed AND wife approved......

Well that sucks since they have know about it for years.  Mine isn't here yet but I will keep track of this thread for sure.

Any ideas from anyone about what is causing it other than bad prep prior to paint?  Maybe getting a bit of water on while it's hot?  Inferior heat resistance of paint?

Never had any problems with the black crinkle coat on my '03 ultra.

It appears to be related to the e-paint process.  CVOs are painted a bit differently (one would expect it to be better quality) and with the granite gray color.  If even a very small amount of machine oil, water, or particulate matter is left on the metal, It will likely begin to peel due to the natural expansion and contraction of paint-metal surface.  The debris that is left under the paint will eventually start the delamination process where the paint separates from the metal.  Once that happens, air gets in and small blisters and bubbles will form.  It comes down to a poor QA process in York.

So what can we expect for a percentage of CVO owners that will be afflicted?  If it is a high percentage wouldn't this thread be on fire by now?

My 2011 Road Glide CVO is starting to peel paint between the pushrods. Will find out next week what the dealer says about it.

Started a poll so we can find out how prevalent this is.  Anyone following this thread plz vote.  I think I counted about 6 or 7 who have posted in this thread, no telling how many elsewhere.

2009 FXSTSSE3, started with white corrosion spots on cylinder fins at 500 miles, dealer said it was corrosion cause by "exposure", that & it was cosmetic so not covered warranty. Also chrome bolt covers started chrome peel. Got worse, now in various places of engine & trans cases & inner primary cover, got nowhere with calling MoCo customer "service", decision fell all on district rep who went with dealer on not covered. Would be nice if MoCo finally owned up to their poor quality & fix it, really depreciates value of my ride & a bitter owner experience.
