Kuryakyn's New Chrome Neck Covers of 08 RK
« on: November 01, 2008, 10:34:01 PM »

About ten days ago I got my Kuryakyn neck cover in the mail. I could not wait to assemble the accent covers. It all look simple enough, direction seem simples, but locking the fork was a JOKE. I stepped back and looked at both sides, they look great. I road around several days without locking my fork, determine to be seen by on lookers. Finally the time came, I was determine to lock that wheel, so I forced it. BIG mistake! It stay lock for a week. I tried everything to unlock it without destroying the accents or the bike. Finally I had enough I so forced it. If it breaks I would except the embarrassment, but it unlocked! The problem now was to figure out how to lock the fork. The neck accent were on perfectly, but there was not enough room to engage the fork lock. I tried everything and finally I rotor out a neat section on the upper chrome fork cover making contact with the neck bumper. That was it. Actually it works better now than before the neck covers. The conclusion, don't force it.

I got those new starter and solenoid covers for CVO RK's. by look great. Kuryakyn did a good job with those,

Left side with the bike number viewable of the service departments. They required a friend to have them engrave the numbers on the accent

Just received my Kuryakyn Deluxe neck covers yesterday with some other purchases as well.

I have the same problem with the fork lock. Thanks for the pictures, but exactly where did you rotor? I think I see the uneven edge, but just want to be sure before I get to grinding away.

I have to clean my SE RoadKing before pictures, so everybody, don't "Worthless" me just yet.

Thanks,

Mike K.

I did a similar install. The deluxe neck cover does have some appeal. I'll keep it on, see how long it lasts.

The odd thing is, of all the parts I ordered from Kuryakyn, this cover had substance; has some weight or didn't feel cheap. And It wasn't, huh? Some of the other items were very cheap feeling. For example, I have wanted the Chrome Filler Panel for months now, and I retained and use my original leather bags. Three times I was referred to part number 1191 from the sales at Kuryakyn.

When it arrived, it still looked good to me. Upon installation, and it could not be installed as I was told, I discovered 2 things immediately: 1. the invoice declared country of origin for all parts ordered, nothing came from the USA, all China, Korea and Taiwan which leaves me with my mouth wide open, and 2. How cheesey the plastic chrome parts felt. Cheap is an understatement, never again is my remedy.

The neck cover is sweet still. The "forks not locking"  problem and grinding on my (way too young for this grinding stuff) 08 SE RoadKing are gruesome and I wouldn't do it myself again.

This is not a difficult fix. I saw your pressure point. The deep crease underlined the problem for me. Mind may have been deeper than yours, because my bike was lock for five days. This is a picture of the tools, and a diagram of the grind disk is 4-inches.  The  hand grinder was use for grinding away a around 1/16 inches more or less. The smaller hand rotor use to round off edges and curves. The 320 sandpaper is use to smooth the surface. I used silver heat resistant paint to dab on the edge to prevent rusting. Make sure that you place a stripe of plywood, heavy cardboard, or masonite to protect the fork cylinder. Make sure after each two seconds of grinding, that you cheack the ability of the fork to lock. If grinding is not your thing, find someone that lays floor tiles. They are handy with the grinders.

Go for it! Yesterday my lower right side passenger peg cover arrive. I have the same problem with Kuryakn products, but it accents that spot well. I've got the lower left front coming next week. And that should be enough for Kuryakn stuff.

Jcarl08,

Thanks for the information. I am a bench grinder kind of guy, so the "On the Bike Chrome Grind" is tedious for me. But, I got it done.

The pressure line was not there originally, and I have you to thank for that. I knew of the inability of the fork locking after installation due to your thread. Thanks. However, in my infinite wisdom, I started the grind before you posted the last picture showing me what to really do. So, I grind the chrome, freehand, with a tungsten-carbide bit that eats up metal in a minute. It is dangerous, because on chrome it will slip out of position and scratch up the local surface; but doable in the sense of RPM's vs. power. Anyway, while I only grind the area of the rubber stopper on the Neck Cover, I realize after numerous attempts that my area must increase triple the size or I will waste my new cover. Wish I had waited for your post now...

All in by Midnight, no harm, few fouls and the neck looks much better now.

Impressed with the skills and abilities of the guys who modded their parts. It's a challenging decision to grind down a part, even more so if it's on the bike. Nice jobs, thanks for sharing with others on the forum!

Must be a significant difference between '07 and '08. I have no problem locking my forks and don't feel that I've lost any noticeable turning radius. I do need to do something about the VIN, but it's not near the top of the priority list yet.
