Ok, since we are on the subject of oil here.....

I was in a local indy shop today and got in a conversation about oil filters.  I mentioned that I like K&N filters.  The owner of the shop said that he recommends the HD filter (and he sells both - and others) because it is rated to catch particles as small as 5 microns.  He pointed out that the K&N filters do not have any such rating on the box, literature, or the K&N website.  Anyone know the rating of the K&N filters... or why K&N does not rate their filters?

I was just curious if most people felt that it was much better than SYN 3.

I won't go so far as to say that mud mixed with sand is better than Syn 3......but it is close :nervous:

I stopped using SYN 3 after the first oil change. I use Amsoil products but Mobil is good as well. My bike ran cooler and MUCH quieter when I dropped the SYN 3. Tranny shifted much smoother. THE MUFFMAN

Any synthetic product is better than the Syn3...there are many threads on the site about lubrication. Stick with better known brands and you'll be fine...Mobil1, Redline, Amsoil, etc...makes a big difference in temperature as well as lubricity. Syn3 looses it's ability to keep internal parts properly lubricated much quicker than popular brands.

Not trying to thread jack but.... I use Mobil 1 and my bike does run cooler,   and rocker box noise is quieter than syn3 but noise is increased compared with the Dino oil I used to run( and did run 1 time in the 113).  I hear the rocker noise and it just bothers me while riding.   I change my oil every 1000 miles and ride real hard, is a real good Dino oil just not good enough for the new higher HP bikes anymore?  I used to run Dino oil in all my older H-D's with no problem.  Now everyone says syn is the way to go. Any thoughts?    Derek

I dumped the M1-VTwin from mine awhile back, and not using syncrap again. Not only is it noisier, but it thins like water above 230deg F, and lowers your oil pressure at that point. Didn't like the stuff at all and went back to dino oil. Change it more frequently, but at 1/2 the price, you can change it twice as often. No reason you can't use dino oil in these motors. Nothing special about em! After all, this chit ain't rocket science!!! FTS!!! ;)

Hoist,
Thats what I was thinking..  It's not like the tolerances are tighter on the new stuff (haha) if anything there worse than the HD parts of the 90's. The syn stuff doesn't sound like it works as good... less noise is good from what I've been told my whole life..Syn lasts longer I guess but that don't matter to me it comes out every 1000mi or so. Thanks I feel better knowing I am not the only one who thinks this way.  FTS is right...  Derek

If you do a search on Mobil1, or synthetic oil, at the top of the main page, you'll come up with several threads on the subject, lots of opinions.
