Any Miracles out there?
« on: November 15, 2008, 02:33:10 PM »

As we get ready for Thanksgiving, I like to reflect on what I'm thankful for. As I was checking an update in another thread, he said it was a miracle! That gave me an idea to start a thread where people can share miracles that happened to them or someone close to them. God is still in the miracle business and it generally doesn't make the news! This can be an uplifting area to come to and read when one is down and needs some lifting up. I believe next to our salvation, prayer is the greatest gift God gives us! A direct line to the creator Himself! God does answer prayer, it just doesn't always end up the way we want it to be. Often later, as they say "Hind sight is 20/20", we can see why God has allowed something into our life we didn't ask for. So, who will be the first? I have some I will share as this thread gets going. If your wondering what qualifies as a miracle.

Oh yeah, this is easy.

On October 17th I slammed into the rear of a stopped vehicle at 50mph.  Slammed!  Not grazed, not flew over, slammed.  Traffic in the #1 lane (only) stopped on the freeway for an unknown reason.  There was very light traffic beforehand, beautiful clear weekday afternoon on I-15 toward Las Vegas, absolutely no reason to expect a stop.  I was looking out at the horizon, we were on a downhill grade & I just flat didn't see (or expect) the traffic stop.  BAM!  I had about 2 seconds from sight to impact.

The bike & I separated at impact.  Don't ask me how, I was conscious the whole time but still don't know how the separation occurred.  I hit the left rear of the car, stopped cold, and fell to the ground.  I watched the bike go sliding between the car & left shoulder, sparking as it slid away.  I was wearing a helmet, sleeveless shirt, jeans, light gloves, and riding boots.  Had I stayed with the bike, I would have most likely lost a ton of flesh & probably bled out right there.

As I laid on the freeway, watching cars in the #2 lane go speeding by, I thought the next thing would be another car colliding into me from the rear.  Didn't happen.  Other cars stopped, complete strangers crowded around me.  I remember looking up at a halo of concerned faces, comforting me, some of them laying hands on me and praying.  God was with me.

CHP stopped traffic so an ambulance could come up the wrong side of the freeway from Las Vegas.  About a 1 1/2 hours later I was at University Medical Center Trauma ICU, where I spent the next 5 days.  My liver was seriously damaged, partially collapsed lung, multiple rib fractures, and a pulverized right knee cap.

My entire family was out of town and/or unavailable.  The night before, my wife left for a 3 week trip to Italy.  I phoned her and encouraged her to complete the trip, which she did.  The group of women she was traveling with lit candles & prayed for me at the Vatican.  My son posted about my condition on facebook.  A young lady friend of his whom I also know, attending a Christian college in Kansas, saw his post on facebook & made a banner to hang in her dorm so the other Christian women could pray for me.  Our Church added me to their prayer chain.  The Harley ministry I am a member of, BlackSheep Harley-Davidsons for Christ, began praying for me all across the country.  A stranger I met at a gas station just before the accident had an overwhelming feeling to pray for me & asked his friends and family to pray for me.  The gentleman whom I just met, at the gas station, I spoke to about BlackSheep Harley-Davidsons for Christ.  He was encouraged by our conversation & later noted the wrecked Harley on the side of the road.  When he saw it, he was overwhelmed with a need to pray for me.  So moved that he told the story to friends he was meeting at Lake Mead.  I know all this because he contacted me through our website to tell me about it.

My injuries were miraculously light.  My recovery has been miraculously fast.  The support and prayers from fellow believers has been humbling and unbelievably fantastic.  I have been so moved by the experience, and seeing how God takes charge when we are completely down, that I have come away from it all a changed man.  Given the choice for a do-over, I would choose to do go down this same path.  The big picture result has been life changing.

AND... now I get to shop for a CVO Road Glide (totaled bike was an '05 Road Glide).  Had this not happened, I would not be getting to know all of you!

This is my miracle.

Our accidents sound a little familuar......driving into the back of vehicles.  Not to many people get to live to tell stories like yours or mine......I know there's a God!

And now we know what your user name stands for Don.  After our PMs back and forth I was starting to think we're not supposed to ask.  Take the time....get well the right way.....and when it's time, I look forward to meeting you and putting a few miles down together.

How about:

Kirk Gibson of the LA Dodgers limping off the bench and hitting a home run against the Oakland A's in the 1988 World Series.
Johnny Unitas leading the Colts over the Giants in the 1958 overtime Championship Game.
Michael Phelps winning 8 gold medals in the 2008 Bejing Olympics.

JC, I remember reading that thread like it was yesterday. I remember when I first saw Andy's post about your wreck, I began praying for you every day. I found when you do that, a bond is created. I felt as though I've known you a long time. I guess that's why they say if you have a hard time forgiving someone, start praying for them every day!

That was when I was a lurker and then later joined the site.  I remember  Don organized a love offering that we sent to you in the hospital. Who'd da thunk that guy that I read and prayed about on an Internet site, would years later come to my house in Memphis and break bread with my family. Only God my friend, Only God! And He has carried you a long way JC. Love ya Bro! God Bless!
