I've got around 30,000 miles on my 2005 SEEG (cherry red) with the factory 103 ci, SE air cleaner, and Rinehart true duals, and fortunately have not had any mechanical problems. I'm considering trading for the 2009 CVO Road Glide, but the factory 110 ci issues are giving me a serious case of cold feet. The 103 is a tried-and-true design, but the factory 110s are another story. The mechanics at my dealership claim that they haven't had any serious problems with any of the 110s they've built in house. Anybody else heard this too? Just finished reading Donny Peterson's article in the January AI Magazine and found it very informative.
As sweet as that Road Glide looks, I want to be able to count on riding it a lot, and not taking it in for recalls and repairs. The jury is still out, and I'm going to wait a little longer for a verdict.

Good Morning, and welcome to CVO Harley!
I will tell you the only problems I've experienced with my 103cid have been self induced from making it into a 107cid.  Other than that, the motorcycle is awesome.  I don't own a 110cid, nor would I own anything newer than a 2006........preferably 2002.......but I will tell you that I'd take a half assed done 103cid based motor all over the US before I'd ride a brand new 110cid to the next town.  JMHO.  Just look around here, and read about how some of these guys have toiled with this engine.......Again........YES........I've toiled with my 103.........but I did it.......not the MoCo.
If I were you.......I'd be keeping the the cherry.  Just my humble 2 cents worth.  What you have...........works.  You don't know you're gonna get that out of a new machine, but as you'll read here, you're more than likely gonna have challenges.  If you're willing to take that chance, drive on.   :2vrolijk_21:

I was driving my 103 down the feeder about to get on the freeway at about 34,000 miles and the the little chain drive on the right front that powers the oil pump self destructed.  Oil pressure went to 0 in nothing flat.  Long story short had to have cylinders honed out 5 thousands because of all the little parts that blew up.  You might want to consider changing those parts out to the gear drive mod to prevent this if your going to keep your 103/107.

But you wouldn't really know that since ya never had one either. I've had my issues and would still do it again in a flash! You might have issues with the 110, you might not with these newer ones. Time will tell. But this chit ain't rocket science and the motors can be made OK. A built right 110 though is a GREAT riding motor, better than any 103 I've ridden. How many times does it take to get it OK? Depends on the parts and the builder. ;)

I had the issues corrected on my '08 110 dyna when it had 100 miles on the clock...it has 10k miles now, and I do ride aggressively...no problems with the engine...looked at the rear head gasket yesterday and no leak...it pulls hard and smooth, don't feel any evidence of pinion runout

Got to agree with you on this one Howie.  Obviously, HD had a self induced brain fart with the early 110's, but looking at the late 08's (last 2-300) and all 09's the problems have been addressed.  Rather than listen to folks continue to whine about the motor instead of taking it in and having it fixed free, I based my decision to upgrade to an '09 110 based upon my first hand information from my son who's in dealership management and the actual '09 reports and problems on the 110's.  50 some out the door....problems 0.  Good enough for me.

IMHO, there's always going to be problems in manufacturing, especially a new motor design.  Hell, my old AMF HD's leaked oil so bad my wife wouldn't let me park on the grass.  Instead of sniveling I fixed them.  The 103's were certainly not a bargain with the cam chain tensioners that would let loose without warning and nuke the entire motor.  I loved the 103 motor, deep six'd the tensioners, did a minor cam and performance build and would swear by the reliability.  So it goes for the 110's.  Known issues are presumably fixed.  Sure, I did a crank runout check and did a motor build before I ever picked it up, but not because it wasn't fixed or reliable.  Just got to make 'em run like you want 'em to run.

I'd have no second thoughts about taking a new 110 coast to coast right out of the box.

You know, if I was as disgusted and disgruntled as some people seem to be about their 110", based on all the bitching, I'd sell the f#@kin' thing and go buy a Honda!  I'm really tired of all the whining.

I'd sooner push a rusted harley rim thru a mudhole than ride a honda...our bikes may have issues as-built, but theay are easily corrected!

First HD dude? We spend big bucks for something we're passionate about and then have problems, damn straight someoner's gonna bitch. If your bike's running good and has no propblems, change the channel. This site's exactly for what your complaining about. That's how we find these issues and fix em ourselves. But a post like yours is worse bitching than anyone's about a 110!!! Get over it!!! ;)

I'm new to this sight and have yet to intro myself. However, I have an 07 FXDSE, Sierra Red/Desert Black and love the ride. I knew there may be some growing pains buying a new model year(motor) so to speak and that's why I got the ext. warranty. I have the gasket repair waiting for me. I have 6k on the bike and no leaks of any kind. I'm also hesitant about getting the gaskets replaced because of the ole "if it ain't broke....  I've had my fair share of warranty work done which I don't need to express here. But, I like the bike and will work through anything that comes up or I will sell it.  What I won't do is mercilessly complain about problems that crop up because it's not worth it. If your Harley isn't working for ya, then I agree, sell it and move on!
