I hadn't ridden with a drink in me for many years. I used to have 1, maybe 2 beers at tops when I was on the bike and I felt so out of control. Then, when I went to Delmarva Bike Week this past summer, I did some drinking and then riding back to the condo at night. I was scared to death to get on my bike, as I had sworn that I would never ride and drink again. I'm not building up to anything here. I had no problems and I made it back in one piece. Knowing that I was on the bike, I kept my drinking to a minimum and I was extremely careful to keep myself right at the speed limit or just below and I made sure to keep my distance from any other vehicles. I am not condoning drinking while riding, and in fact I'm not real happy with myself that I let it happen, but what I am saying is that if you can't keep yourself from drinking, you sure better take it easy. I know everyone can't make it with complete abstinence, so I hope you can train yourself in advance to remember that if you get on your bike impaired even by one beer, it's time to think of only one thing on your ride home...safety. I will say that over the years, I must have gained something in the constraint department, because I was no longer tempted to ride fast and out of control like my younger days.
