110" rattle
« on: December 23, 2008, 08:09:20 AM »

I ride a 09 CVO Road Glide. Has anyone come up with a solution to get rid of the engine rattle at 3000 - 4000 RPM. Mine is very loud. Louder than most according to the mechanics at the dealership. Dealer has tried adjustable push rods. Helped for about 200 miles. If anybody has solved this issue I would appreciate hearing about how they did it. Thanks.

HD's says it is because the piston has such a short skirt.  I have the same issue and haven't been able to get rid of it yet.  Looking at some new lifter that are copies of the older part number ending in -99.

Heres a link.  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=29499.0

You're saying the "rattle" is lifters, not short skirt pistons?

110mofo want more info on the lifters, thats why I posted the like.  I think if the short piston skirt was making that much noise on so many bikes we would have heard of piston problems by now. JMO

Good Morning Mr. Magoo:

I was just saying I'm interested in this thread, I had an 07 with a lot of problems and one thing I remember is the rattle noise at 2200 rpm and again at 2800 rpm. My 09 has the same thing but not nearly as bad. I would like to know more about this certainly I am not an expert regarding this..

I been working with the adjustable pushrods but cann't get the noise to go away, someone had told me about these lifter and am thinking I will give them a try would be a cheap fix if it worked.  I talked to Dan Baisley and he said it was low oil pressure not keeping the lifters pumped up.  Have the Baisley spring to up the oil pressure will try it with the lifter if I do it. But no one really seems to know what the real issue is.

Or is willing to admit.

I had this noise with my 07 seuc. When they did the 0905 enhancement I talked HD into changing the pistons, cylinders and rings also. HD admitted to me the noise is piston slap due to pistons not having much of a skirt. They said it would not affect the longevity of the engine, and it is considered normal. They only agreed to change the additional parts after much discussion and told me the noise would still be there. They did this for customer satisfaction only. After the work was done the noise was gone completely. So I have to say it was indeed piston slap. Ultimately my motor started leaking again after 700 miles at the rear head and mostly at the rear cylinder base o-ring. The dealer also found oil coming into the intake from the front cylinder head. After 3 tear downs they finally decided to give me a new crate engine. I have put about 150 miles on it now (I live in Vegas) and I may be hearing a slight noise when engine is cold only. It is too soon to know for sure. Hopefully this engine turns out to be quiet. It sounds like it is the luck of the draw on these engines as far as this engine noise goes.

Have they checked the rocker box clearance? many members had issues with the springs  / collars contacting the box. This was mostly on early 07's and 08's.

I have a 120" build with 4 1/8" bore and 4 1/2" stroke that doesn't have that rattle and the skirts are shorter than those on the 110". Just saying that the 110" doesn't have to slap because of skirt length.

I have Baisley heads and the spring and still have the noise however a little less than before after the 0905 fix. But the biggest difference is when starting the new ACR's don't make the big bang as before, actually starts smoother.
