5 speed or SE 6 speed?
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:15:57 PM »

Need some advice from the gearheads out there.  I am running the stock 5 speed with my 120 motor.  This engine produces so much torque early on that first gear is practically useless and since I ride fast for long periods, dropping a few hundred rpm in fifth gear would be nice.  Therefore, would like to get more out of first gear and drop a few hundred going to sixth.  However, I'm almost certain a sprocket change may be needed as well.

I rented a Road Glide with a stock 96 and I was impressed with the way it pulled and I did use the sixth gear more than I thought I would which is why I have been mulling this over.  Just don't know if it is worth the $2K to make it happen.  Recommendations?

Baker DD6, it can be ordered with different 1st gear configurations. Here is a good chart from Baker showing the gear ratios of the different 6-speed kits availible.

Sounds to me like you don't need 6 gears, you need a higher overall gear ratio (lower numerically).  If it were me, I'd look first at any possible primary ratio changes, then the trans/rear pulley ratio.  I'm not certain what's available, since most of the time we are looking for the opposite effect, but I would imagine there are parts available from the aftermarket.  If you decide on a trans change, hd-dude gave you the best idea.  Baker has optional first gear ratio's, while the SE does not.

I've got the SE gear sets in both bikes now.  They do a fine job in a bike that's in standard trim or close to it.  They won't fill the needs you're looking to fill though.  Not by themselves anyway.

pete,

In my pseudo SE 03 Road Glide I had the Jims 120 (131 hp & 134 tq.) I had the SE 6 Speed it ran great. Currently in my 04 SEEG i have a SE 103 (103 hp & 116 tq) c/w the Baker DD6 it also runs great. i think either the SE 6 peed or the baker would work great for your engine.

Pete, think about this one:  Baker now has a seven speed.  The Harley-Davidson factory 6-speed ratios are: 1st (3.34), 2nd (2.30), 3rd (1.71), 4th (1.41), 5th (1.18), 6th (1.00). The Baker DD7 transmission will have the following ratios : 1st (3.76), 2nd (2.75), 3rd (2.06), 4th (1.55), 5th   (1.27), 6th (1.10), 7th (1.00).

If that first is too low, change the front sprocket.  Sounds like you have the torque for it.  What about the clutch, though?  For me, the nicest part about the 6 speed is the lower rpm's when on the freeway for longer trips....  Seven would really be great!

The DD7 gearset only works with the '07 and later models ('06 and later Dyna's).

Isn't 6th gear in the SE 6-speed overdrive (i.e. <1.00)?

Seems like that's the answer & a lot cheaper to boot.
