110 head recall
« on: December 30, 2008, 07:48:10 PM »

Anybody had their 110 heads replaced by the dealer? Buddy took his bike in for some work & the dealer told him there was a recall on his heads. This wasn't for all 110's just certain ones. Put a new set of heads on N/C. This is supposedly on the '08's only.

Larry I believe the recall affects all 110" bikes built in '07 and about midway thru the '08 model year...but the fix is a joke because it doesn't really address the real issues

It's not a recall, but a "Product Enhancement".  See attachment for details.

larry, don't you love a warm welcome?

IMO, the main issue is that 110" is the biggest motor h-d has ever made, is hamstrung by the tree-huggers' emmision laws, and therefore overheats...the solution is to get a power commander/sert/tts, a free-flowing exhaust/air cleaner, and have it tuned properly

Then again you can do the above:
SERT, Rinehart True Duals, SE Stage 1 A/C and dyno tuned to run cooler
and still have a rear cylinder liner move! I believe Harley realized they had a problem and corrected it. I can only assume this as it has been a while since anyone has posted on this (cylinder liner slip) issue. I hope this in fact the case.

It seems the 09's are holding up, which is good news for all!

Here's another attachment that shows what changed in the cylinder head.  NBD, in my opinion.  It's a pdf file, click on it and it will open.

I wonder about the liner-slip issue...has anyone measured how much the liner sticks up on a brand new set of cylinders versus a "failed" set?

If the 110 cylinders are crap, why do I have 10k miles on my bike and no leaks?...I have stock cylinders, 200# ccp, cometic mls head gaskets, and 96" heads off an '06 or later bike

Did that and the sob still sprung a leak at the rear cylinder.   :nixweiss:

Hi Skyhook

Nothing to measure. On the replacement cylinder, the liner is flush. The front cylinder was also removed and replaced at my directions with Axtell's. It too is flush.

the reason I ask is because the man I work for says that when he builds cylinders, he leaves the liner proud to account for the different heat expansion of iron versus aluminum

Hmmm. Just letting you know what I got. How do you know how much to allow for as the motor's going to expand at a different rate depending on weather, lenght of time your riding, how hard your riding, oil coolers, fans, oil weight? Beyond me, that's for sure.

edit to add: The amount of liner movement that caused the leak was just enough to snag a finger nail on but couldn't be seen by these old eyes.

Probably because even H-D and their Chinese suppliers don't screw up 100% of the time.  Just look at the crank scissoring fiasco.  Plenty of failures, especially in '07, but some have gone two years without a problem.  If a part has to have a 100% failure rate to be considered crap, then I would have to take back all my nasty comments about the MoCo over the past 3 years.  Nah, no way I'm gonna do that.  They are still purveyors of crap in my humble opinion.
