Tired of the buffeting
« on: January 03, 2009, 10:40:53 PM »

I like the look of the standard RG wind shield over the aftermarket. It has a stockier look as opposed to the old Vetter -thin lay ed back profile of some of the after market. I sat on an 09 RG at the dealership today and it looks like it will do the job. I have the old pre september KW. Looks great but it's like making love with a cloths pin on you nose. It could be better.  Has any one ridden the 09 SERG with the standard issue RG wind shield installed? thanks for any feed back.  :nixweiss:

Can't comment on the 09, as my dealer F****d me out of mine, but the stock RG window works great on the 01.

i road with it for a little over 200 miles yesterday. it definetly keeps the wind off, but the top of the shield was right in the center of my view. i'm 5'10.

A genuine HD wind shield is priced at a modest $150 (with a new vehicle purchase discount of 15% that is typical). Most important is the material used, a thick tempered lex an with a hard scratch resistant coating. most of the after market shields are acrylic with no hard protective coat. KW is an exception, note the thinner material thickness thou. I think the HD shields have been overlooked. The only other issues would be the stunning good looks of the KW and the re curve design of clearview.  ;)

There are very few things from the MoCo that I have been 100% satisfied with so I end up turning to the aftermarket manufacturers for some quality products. I have a Clearview GT Small on my CVO Road Glide and I am very satisfied with it. Have you considered looking at the aftermarket manufacturers (besides KW) for a better quality windshield?

Yes I rode for a while with the standard Harley Road Glide Windshield while I was waiting m Clearview to be delivered. It works but I do not like the way Harley windshield is drilled for mounting. Slots instead of holes on 4 of the mounting points, also the rubber seal is useless. I highly recommend Clearview for the Road Glide. Currently using GT Small light tented.

I purchased the 12" KW Clear, might be ok for the summer, but did nothing to stop the buffeting. I now have the tall touring 16" on the bike. Very little buffeting on the sides and none on the top. Don't particularly like the looks, but function is good. Short of a clear sail on the front of a RG, I don't believe you can ever cure the buffeting on your ears with any RG windshield. BTW, if anyone would be interested in purchasing the KW, send me a PM.

I currently use the KW 8" black. I'm only 5' 7" so I thought it would be a good fit for me. At freeway speeds above 70 mph I can really feel the wind hit me in my face when I ride straight up. I'm now thinking of the KW 12" or maybe the Cee Bailey 9.5" Sport. You really can't beat the LOOKS of the KW 8" though...

Ironhorse,

I was interested in the shields from F4 and gave them a call inquiring about the design of their shields. I was told that their shield are replica's of Harley's standard shield (specifically asked about the Road Glide) but using their material. I'm not impressed with the performance / wind protection of the standard shield on the Road Glide, so I opted not to purchase the F4 product. I did tell the guy I spoke with that I love the strength of their shield and if they did some R&D and offered something that performed better than the standard Harley shield, I'll be the first in line to purchase one.

I bought the large (tall) H-D Road Glide windshield for my 2008 11 state trip and it worked GREAT!  I am 5' 11" and although I did look through the windshield, but it posed no problem at all.  No buffeting and just enough air to keep you cool.
