FXR Fuel Tank Rattle?
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:12:15 PM »

Well guys, I guess when ya start digging around in our bikes when ya never have done before like I haven't; ya tend to find crap ya don't want to or don't know what it is.

After removing tank I drained little gas little that was left in it because I heard something rattling around inside. Turned tank upside down and tried to shake out  ::)...Right!...Anyway, sounds like one very small marble bouncing around in there and a couple of other little ones bouncing around that sound like bb's.  :confused5:  :nixweiss: Any thoughts guys?

Sounds like a "Things I Have Removed From a Fuel Tank Over the Years" thread.

Allen socket that fell off the bit while taking the two screws off the top of the dash on a dresser.

Hunk of a squeeze type line clamp that someone must have left loose on a line after service on a Road King.

Odd squishy debris on an old Pan.

Couple of little pebbles/rocks on an old FL.

That's all.

Still got my curiosity; maybe prior owners ole lady dropped her diamond ring in there or something...or...hope I never get stopped and they pull out the dogs  :o just sayin...maybe  ;D  :nixweiss:  ;D

That's a good motto to live by. If it ain't broke don't fix it.  I know both of the two older bikes mentioned above had rocks in their pockets for a long time before I had good reason to have the tank off and shake everything out.  The socket I dropped myself.  Dammit.  But it was on a tank with a quick disconnect in the crossover line, not much gas, and the tank was coming off anyway.  So that was an easy one.  The hose clamp belonged to a buddy.

He heard "something."  I didn't.  Told him he was nuts.  He was also an incredible worry wart about such things.  There actually being something in his tank cost me a steak dinner that night.

Fuel filter was clinging with a very fine glassy, gritty substance with some bits and pieces of a grayish rubbery substance  :vrolijk27: :vrolijk27: :zwtf: :help: :furious2:.....O)K, OK....Calm down Blaine...Seems like I remember a thread where someone had to reline their tank  :nixweiss: Anyone think I'm on ta something here or sumpin else  :confused5:

Oh...Also after petcock was removed and cleaned; I poured a bit more gas into the tank, shook it up to see if I could get the stuff inside to settle down at the petcock hole....But no luck...stuff is still ratteling around in there and can't seem to get an eybeall on it. Almost seems like it could be the sealer is breaking loose but still attcahed enough to not fall out.... >:(  :nixweiss:

A little bit of petcock poop (gawd, I'll be calling it that forever now) is normal accumulation.  Just part of regular service.  Don't even count that as foreign matter.  After all you've done maybe the rattle you're hearing really isn't there.  Bet yourself a steak dinner.  You just might win.

Cool...Petcock Poop  ;D  is normal   :2vrolijk_21:  So now I have to determine if I want to bet myself a steak dinner......just in case I should win....And after all, maybe that rattle is in my head; I've been told that before  ;D   :2vrolijk_21:

Ask the voices man.  One of them will be square with you.

Knew the fuel filter when I saw it; just ain't never seen the chit before. So now that Iv'e cleaned the filter up I can reinstall and let the collection of new poop from the rattle I didn't hear begin and go full circle again  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Exactly :2vrolijk_21: .  It's a nature thing.  The circle of (petcock) poop.
