~~

Now to figure out how to mount my SE Ignition Module ~~ mounting the module in place of the existing stock one is gonna be a bit of a mind teaser for me. I gotta figure out how I'm gonna get the stock one off as it is being held on by what I think are rivets on a type of plate next to the battery box.

Look CLOSER !!! Those are not rivets. They are bolts, with nuts on them. The bolt stud comes thru from the battery box side and is welded in from that side so it does not spin when you tighten the nuts.

Here's where it's gonna get a bit tricky..... or not, someone has done this in the past (I left mine there and went a different way)  The nuts are in a small channel.  When you are looking at it, look over to the left, past the module.  You'll see another bolt out there that is just like the two that hold the module in place.  I can get a 3/8" socket on that nut, however I can not get it on the ones for the module because of the small space in the channel.  You will need either a THIN WALL SOCKET, or a special tool.   Maybe a nut driver.......  I'll be right back, I got nut drivers, I'll go try it.... cya in a few minutes.

Mikey

I'm Back !
OK, I checked this (reason it was easy to ck, I started the tear down on my bike last night .... I have the tank and side pannels, coil, carb and stuff like that off arleady ... didn't get to work on it today :(............. but that's another thread  :D )

it is DEFINITELY a 3/8 nutI can get the nut driver on the one off to the left of the module, no problem. But that channel in the modual is so small the driver doesn't really go up in there, even pushing like crazy on it.  If it were me, I'd take the 3/8" nut driver to the grinder and grind down the outside rim all the way around until it fit in there.  There would still be enoung material on the nut driver to get the nuts off.  They aren't very tight, and not very big (3/8" so how tight could the really be) ... since their only job is just to hold the module onto the bike. They don't get any torque really.

I suspect I will have to remove the rivets and replace with nuts and washers. I didn't look real close; so I'll get to it after the A/C unit....OK guys...Thanks again for your help  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Thanks Mikey...I checked the bolts just glancing at them today as I said...Could be one of the lens feel out of my glasses and I could not see chit ;D Howie knows what I'm talkin about  ;D I just looked in the SM on page 8-22 and it says to remove the two screws and washers...Sooooooooooooooooo; I musta been seeing things..or NOT  ;D Anyway, No way tonight to mess with it. After I drop the grandbaby off to school tomorrow, I'm gonna look real close (With two Lens) and see what your talkin about. I suspect from what your sayin; I'll be doing the "nut drive grind" on this one...That sounds like a good way to adapt to the situation  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D Let ya know soon as I git er done  ;D

Blaine, if you want to retain the stock cover, the Ness Big Sucker is the way to go!  It comes with a K&N filter, as opposed to the SE unit that now use some inferior brand of filter (used to be K&N).  Really, you do need to open her up with some aftermarket kit, otherwise, you're choking the motor off, no matter if you've done any other mods to the motor, or not.

Just be sure to have the carb re-jetted when you're done in order to maximize the performance gains and driveability of the bike, if it hasn't already been done.  I forget, what air cleaner did ya have on there before?

Hey Brian...Ta get back to the original topic of this thread for a moment    :2vrolijk_21:  ;D

Last night I was readin some older threads and now I can't remember which where you told someone the Ness A/C kits require cleaning/washing and oiling?
I read my instructions for installation but did not receive any instructions pertaining to cleaning and maintenance.

Can ya school me on what ya mean by having to oil this kit? Are ya talkin about the Air Filter itself or some other part of the kit?...Thanks Man  :2vrolijk_21:

Some filters are throwaway and some are reusable. Most peformance A/C's use a K&N filter, which is a reusable cotton gauze that requires oil to help capture the dirt, then requires cleaning and reoiling when it gets dirty. ;)

OK...So throwing it in a bucket of soap and warm water and then spraying it down with some WD-40 won't cut it huh?  ;D

I've been using K&N filters in my trucks and cycles for years.
I've always used the recharge kit, they don't cost a lot, and go a long way
you DO NOT have to put much oil on the filter.  Too much oil and you'll have a bit of a mess..... just spray on some oil in several spots around the filter. You DO NOT have to SATURATE the filter. Just turn it pink in several places. The oil will migrate to fill in the empty spots.

I never pay attention to the miles before cleaning.  I look at the filter, if/when it appears that a cleaning is needed, then I do it, otherwise I put it back and ride some more :-)

Good deal...Thanks mikey...I checked out the link Howie posted up; so now with you and Howie's help I know what to do and look for..Thanks guys  :2vrolijk_21:

Now...Back off topic (Kinda, Sorta,Maybe)...Went out and looked at the Ignition module and looked really, really, really hard. I think I managed to see what resembles a nut on the stud as you described. Soooooooooooooooo, I'm gonna do the "Nut Drive Grind" and see if it works. Now...Before I do that, I'm thinkin of purchasing the following items to go along with my Muffs, Ignition module, and A/C kit, then if I do buy the additional stuff; I can get the carb rejetted if needed, which I suspect it will.

1.  SE 8mm spark plug wires...PN: 32090-98.....$13.00
2.  SE Sparkplugs.................PN: 32998-01.....$16.00
3.  SE Coil 40,000 volts.........PN: 31653-97.....$55.00

Total---------------------------------------$84.00 + Tx

Now...Will purchasing these additional items to go along with my muffs, ignition module, and A/C kit really make any difference (Noticeable or not) in the performance or throttle response, etc, etc.

I know how Howie feels...Howie be sayin FTSE...GO the S&S way  ;D

Mike's (RedFxr2) opinion as I understand it is the purchase of the SE Coil would not mean any additional gains in performance strictly speaking in Stage I terms.

And Tim (Who we haven't seen much lately) would probably say, "Blaine, what the hell ya doing man"?  ;D

So...If anyone wants to jump in with their thoughts...I'm ready now  :2vrolijk_21:  ;D
