Blaine
if your carb is stock and never been rejetted, by adding the new air cleaner you are adding more air, you need to add more fuel.............you should buy a 45 slow jet, a 1988 sportster needle and remove the aluminum plug and turn out the screw  a total of 2 turns.............not hard........costs less than $20............if you decide to go that route I can find the part # for the needle.....................the way you are set up now don't be surprised if the carb coughs and spits after being warmed up

Hey Paul...Yea man, I just got done torquing her down (Banjo bolts and backplate). I was gonna pull the plugs and put new plugs in but I didn't have too. When I pulled the first plug out it was burnin white which if I remember correctly means the fuel air mix is too lean (not sure), so I just stuck the old plug back in and I'm gonna take her for a spin for a few minutes and see how sure runs because I've only heard her run at warm up. Now, you are the second person to tell me I should buy the 45 slow jet and the 88 sportster needle to install in the carb (the carb is stock) my local wrench when I told him what I was doin said the same as you. I'm fixing to go for a little ride and if you would; could you send me those PN's for the 45 slow jet and the Sportster needle...Thanks for your help man...Blaine  :2vrolijk_21:

sportster needle HD part # 27094-88...............just ask for a 45 slow jet and when you have the carb off with it upside down, next to the bowl will be an aluminum plug ....carefully drill it out and you will find the mixture screw......gently turn it in, very softly.......then turn it out counter clock wise 2 full turns.............you should be good to go ....later you may have to do some fine tuning but you should see a great improvement.......best bang for the buck with that carb.............

Excellent accurate direction Paul! Agree that you do everything Paul mentioned about the carb here Blaine! :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

One clarification. "gently turn it in, very softly" ADD: til it bottoms...........

You want to turn the mixture screw all the way in, then back it out 2 turns to start off. As Paul said, you might need to fine tune after, but that's the place to start. But it's very important you do this SOFTLY til it bottoms. DO NOT OVERSCREW IT IN!!! It's not a fastener you're turning. You're adjusting the fuel mixture with this screw!

Hey man...Just got back from a little rideing around. As you all have said; I'm gonna have to re jet.

In town driving resulted in some slight missing and some minimal (but noticeable) carb choking and carb backfire while at redlights sitting at idle.

Bottom line; I'm gonna re jet..Going to the Harley shop tomorrow and get the 45 slow jet in stock and may have to wait for the Sportster needle to come in on order. I thought of going the Dynojet Thunderslide route as per Brian's recommendation; but for the money, I'm just gonna go the 45 slow jet/ sporster needle routefor now and if this dosen't work, then to option 2 which is the Thunderslide kit....Thanks to all you guys for your help  :2vrolijk_21:

If ya really want the last lil bit you get with Dynojet's kit, do what Paul said, and also cut the existing spring down. DJ gives you a stronger spring for faster response. Cutting the stock one down would do just as well. ;)

Well folks, were just about to the end of this adventure. I was fortunate enough today to have Paul (zn14) a.k.a "Tha Z-Man" call me today and extended his expertise and help in re jetting my stock carb. Gents; Paul knows carbs; he guided me thru all the steps required to replace my 42 jet with a 45 jet and in replacing the stock jet needle with a stock needle out of the carb of an 88 XLH. as it turned out it was a piece of cake with Paul's help; any worries or concerns of my screwing it up were soon dispelled. I was impressed with his knowledge and ability. Some of you who have done this before may say, "Oh well, no big deal"; but, I say "BIG DEAL for me." A mechanic I ain't, not even the shade tree type. So, with that said; my hats off to Paul and also a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone on this thread who supplied their info, knowledge, expertise, and opinions. I guarantee all played a part in my getting this done.

Now, after putting the carb back on and getting everything back together; I kicked her over for the first time in a week a nd she fired up the first time. I took her down the road for about 5 minutes just running her through the gears and such and she did not miss a beat. Much better throttle response, no choking, coughing, spitting, back firring...Nothing but smooth running Harley...I BE HAPPY  ;D. Gonna ride her as she is and see if she changes any; but I suspect she is good to go....THANKS again Paul ( A great guy) and all of you for your help...Blaine   :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
