Got Bike back today ( Sort of )
« on: January 13, 2009, 05:38:07 PM »

Hi All,

I just thought I would vent al little .
I bought a 2004 Black and Blue SEEG this past December after some good advice on this board. I sent it to my Harley Dealer to have the front wheel replaced since it was pitted as well as new tires and the 10,000 mile service and set of Screamin Eagle Slipons installed that I bought from Sid on this board.

After much anticipation the dealer called and said the bike was ready and it would be delivered today. It was delivered alright but it was laying on the right side of the bike in the trailer. The delivery person said it was the first time it has ever happened to him in 4 years and he felt pretty bad. The right saddle bag and front lower will need to be repaired/painted as well as the leather on the inside of the right lower. They promptly took the bike back to the dealer who called me to tell me he would do whatever was neccessary to repair the bike properely. I was concered about the new front rim and tire since I guessing it could be tweaked from the way the bike was laying in the trailer. He said they use a Condor Chock with straps and it has never happened to them before.

On a better note - I started it up to hear the pipes(Screamin Eagle Performance Mufflers 65115-98b) and hands down it had the best sound of any Harley I have ever owned ! I have tried Rinehart, Samson Rolled Thunder, Wild Pigs, Cobra and some others I have forgot but these are a keeper.

Sid thanks for the great deal on the pipes.

I can not wait to try that 103 !!!!

Sorry to hear of the delevery problem.  Some of the parts for those have been discontinued.  I would want new parts not repaired stuff.

I'm with Dave (Mr Magoo) on this one........tell em you want new parts not re-painted.  They'll never get it to match perfectly, anyway.  They'll get it close but not perfect.  That's why they have insurance, anyway.

Are you suggesting that they don't even use tie downs, once the bike is put in the wheel chock?  That would be putting a lot of torque on that front wheel just about every time they go around a curve or corner.

You'll like the way the bike rides and runs.......a lot!  That's why we still have ours. :2vrolijk_21:

It sounds like your dealer is trying to do the right thing.  As the others have stated, ask for new painted parts from the MOCO..   Don't know where you live weather wise, but you may not be missing any riding time while it's down a little longer.  Let us know how it works out.

Wow, bummer of a story, but you sound pretty upbeat about it, so that's good!  Keep us posted on what the dealer does as far as repairs.  Sorta scary he even mentioned repainting. :nervous:

Bummer on the accident! It sounds like your dealer is trying to do the right thing. Keep a close eye and make sure they follow through. Hope they get it turned around in a timely and quality fashion.

fgizzo , sorry to hear about your bike.  Things do happen , but as long as they are willing to have the bike repaired you should be ok.  I would not have any of the parts repaired and repainted.  They can get you brand new parts from HDMC.  It might take 10 to 12 weeks to get the parts but it will be well worth it.  Best of luck!! :2vrolijk_21:

It is great to have this kind of discussion. I think I will be calling the owner of the dealer and request that these parts not be repainted but replaced. My question is will the old saddle bag and lower fairing match the ones from Harley, if they are replaced. They did use tie downs, but my guess is they were not cranked down enough, very frustrating. I have had several bad experiences with three Harley dealers in the Chicagoland area. I am not sure what options to the dealers there are?

fgizzo, last summer I was side swiped by a woman in her car.  She nearly riped off my right saddlebag.  When I pulled up next to her and told her to pull over because she had just side swiped my bike with her car she took off.  I went after her, I got into of her vehicle to block her in and she rear ended me and took off again.  So I went after her again.  I had several other driver help me block her in to keep her from trying to run again.  To make this a shorter story I had $3,900.00 worth of damage.  I needed a new right saddlebag and a rear fender.  It was supposed to be eight to ten weeks.  The parts arrived from the HDMC in ten weeks.  The parts were nearly a perfect match.  Now it will take ten to twelve weeks for stock painted parts.  Sorry, be it could be even longer for CVO painted parts.  The wait was worth it!! :2vrolijk_21:

Straps or no straps, if the bike fell over while in a wheel chock the front end needs to be checked carefully. The bike falling over while in a chock puts a tremendous strain on the wheel and forks.

As others have mentioned CVO paint can take awhile.

The parts are painted in batches, as in when they have enough for a run. So your new parts, as you should certainly request, can be anywhere in the Que. You could get them next week or, in my case it took almost 3 months to get a tour pak lid.

My dealer damaged my gas tank and they did not hesitate to order a me tank (3 months)

Let's put it this way . . . You stand a lot better chance of a good match getting brand new parts painted from Harley, as the original ones were, than taking anything to any paint shop on earth to be touched up.  I had to replace my fender last year after my wife decided to trying and run mine over in the driveway.  The new fender was almost a perfect match, although if I held the two side-by-side, I could see very (and I mean VERY) slight differences in the shade of the black between the two and when I went to apply the new fender spear again, I noticed that the pinstriped flames were not quite a symetrical as they were on the original, but these differences are being super-critical and not anything that anyone would notice unless they were as intimate with the bike as I am.

On the other hand, I had a very reputable painter in town paint the rear fender of my FXR3 last summer - one solid color with no graphics.  In the right light, the color is much different than the side covers, tank, or front fender.  I can live with it, but it makes me wish I'd have just bit the bullet on a new painted fender from Harley since they were still available.

IMHO, better to have Harley provide you painted parts especially for the multi-color, custom paint on your SEEG.

I had paint replaced on my SEEG after an accident (I think it was about twelve weeks) and it was a great match.  Like Brian said, you're better off getting parts that the MoCo has painted stock rather than a body shop trying to match a multistep process that the MoCo will not let be known.

I don't even think it will be an issue for you or them.......that's why they have insurance.  Just insist on new parts and that you want your front end, wheel etc. checked out also.

Man Fgizzo that's pretty rough.  Take the advice, these guys have seen and talked about it all.  Take the time, get it done right.  Add anything else you had planned for later so you won't have down time later.  IMO you will love the "103" I have it in two bikes.  Good luck and congrats on the SEEG.
