It is great to have this kind of discussion. I think I will be calling the owner of the dealer and request that these parts not be repainted but replaced. My question is will the old saddle bag and lower fairing match the ones from Harley, if they are replaced. They did use tie downs, but my guess is they were not cranked down enough, very frustrating. I have had several bad experiences with three Harley dealers in the Chicagoland area. I am not sure what options to the dealers there are?
Let's put it this way . . . You stand a lot better chance of a good match getting brand new parts painted from Harley, as the original ones were, than taking anything to any paint shop on earth to be touched up. I had to replace my fender last year after my wife decided to trying and run mine over in the driveway. The new fender was almost a perfect match, although if I held the two side-by-side, I could see very (and I mean VERY) slight differences in the shade of the black between the two and when I went to apply the new fender spear again, I noticed that the pinstriped flames were not quite a symetrical as they were on the original, but these differences are being super-critical and not anything that anyone would notice unless they were as intimate with the bike as I am.
On the other hand, I had a very reputable painter in town paint the rear fender of my FXR
3 last summer - one solid color with no graphics. In the right light, the color is much different than the side covers, tank, or front fender. I can live with it, but it makes me wish I'd have just bit the bullet on a new painted fender from Harley since they were still available.
IMHO, better to have Harley provide you painted parts especially for the multi-color, custom paint on your SEEG.
