By JULIE MURPHY
Staff Writer

HOLLY HILL - A motorcyclist is dead after he was rear-ended, catapulting his bike onto the car in front of him, and run over on Ridgewood Avenue this evening, police said.

The motorcyclist pulled out of the BFFAR parking lot about 5:15 p.m. in front of the woman who eventually hit him as they approached the left-hand turn lane for Mason Avenue, witness Timothy Ashcraft said. There was a chain-reaction of fender benders in front of the victim before he was hit, he said.

"It sounded like a freight train," said a witness who asked not to be identified.

All three southbound lanes of Ridgewood Avenue were closed north of Mason for more than an hour as Holly Hill police investigated the crash.

The woman driving the Jaguar that hit the motorcyclist was arrested for driving under the influence, but police had not released her name at 6:30 p.m. because the investigation was still under way, Holly Hill Sgt. Mitchell Dees said.

The motorcyclist has not been identified pending notification of family.

i feel lucky cause i was almost in that area at that time.............. but fl. does not prosecute people with money do they? (remember the billy lane case)

I served on a DUI jury in December last year. Let's just say that these cases are not simple, though in the end we did convict.

Yes, we should convict those guilty of DUI... with harsh penalties. I think jail time should be mandantory.

I think it would be even better if we found a way to keep intoxicated drivers out of their vehicles -- at least behind the wheel. I know that's controversial and difficult and all of that. However, the best way to fix a problem is to stop it from happening. Punishing offenders is only a small consolation to the bereaved.

BTW, this is not meant to be a political statement or start a political argument. It's just a simple observation based on the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...

I know I am going to get slammed but here goes. I think we kind of work a dual edge sword here. We want to smack 4 wheelers when they drink but what about the whole beer drinking bike riding crowd?? I went 2 times last  year on organized runs with big groups (Elks and Toy run) where they stopped at 4 or more bars and drank beer at each one. This needs to stop. I was so thankful last year to see at MV that once the drinking started nobody rode. It just wasn't allowed. I know some of you think your bullet-proof..............you're not and your still here by God's grace. So if you want to drink thats cool just don't ride. And if you don't drink and you watch you buddies do it and don't stop it......shame on you! It will be too late after there are gone!..........I'm done!

Unfortunately some people just don't get it. A fellow who has worked for me for almost seven years lost his licence last month due to DUI . His work was dependant on him having a licence and was driving one of my trucks daily. I had no choice but to let him go. He did find other employment but at almost $400.00 per week less than he made working for me. Plus now very high insurance costs when he finally gets his licence back. One year here in Ontario.

THIS STORY DOES NOT SUPRISE ME AT ALL! I have been a firefighter for some 30 years with 27 of that in The Nations Capital. In my 27 years I have spent downtown 10 of that was on a "HEAVY SQUAD". We are the guys that cut the victims out of the wreckage. Yes I have seen it all (or almost all) in this short time. I can tell you that in 90% of the accidents we ran alcohol was a factor. Not all were charged but you could smell the alcohol on them. In our society it has become a crime to drink and drive but it is still accepted by most as "JUST SOMETHING MOST DO"

Be Safe
