GPS features
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:30:19 PM »

I am getting a new 09 SE Ultra next month. How easy is it to use the GPS? Can you actually see a map or is by verbal direction? Is the system easy to use ? Thanks.

Don't believe the stock GPS will give verbal announcements of directions, you have to leave the Navigational CD in while using the GPS, and some have said the features leave something to be desired. Many have opted to go w/an aftermarket GPS. Garmin Zumo has been one of the most popular lately.

the stock gps does give verbal directions.. most of the time wrong.  If your not on a main road the unit has no idea where you are and navigates off road.  i use the zumo and its much better.  Stock one cant get me to my house where the zumo has no problem

Your bike will come with version 2.0 software that will have more current maps but I cannot verify how accurate they will be for your area.

Basically, the HD GPS is not very feature rich. It will give you verbal directions. I haven't used mine in over two years. I use the Zumo and am very happy with it.

The stock GPS will give you basic turn commands, like: "in one half mile turn left", but will not do like other more feature-rich GPS units and give you the name of the street/road you're turning on.  The display will give limited directional indications, such as a left turn arrow when a left turn is coming up and the distance to the turn.  There are no map presentations on the display, unfortunately.  I use mine mainly for finding gas stations and HD dealerships that are nearby.  It isn't always accurate when it comes to dealerships though, especially those that have moved or opened up new in the last two years or so.  I do like the fact that it does give the split screen capability when you are using it to navigate with, so you can see both what the nav is doing, and what is on the radio.  Is it the greatest GPS unit, no, and a long way from it, but it is functional in a limited way and you can do basic navigation, like others have said, point A to B, with it.  I do use mine quite a bit when I'm on the road, but mainly to find gas stations.

MB1953 - I have an 09 CUSE.  It took some time to learn, but I use mine all the time.  It does give verbal directions in the helmet and it gives most street names.  It has worked well for me so far.  The problem with the feature
rich ones is that you can't use or at least shouldn't be using them while riding anyway.  In short, I think the features are pretty much useless, and why put down another few hundred.

Make sure it works before you leave the dealer.  My 09 has never been able to find a satellite.  If I ever get it fixed I will let you all know what was wrong with it.

They do have Verbal commands that come through your speakers. It's not really a map that you can see but has arrows etc. I found it pretty simple to use and like it.

GUPPYTRASH: Ever get the GPS figured out? Mine will be here in a week or so. Great tip about trying it out at the Dealer PRIOR to leaving.
Thanks.
