GUPPYTRASH: Ever get the GPS figured out? Mine will be here in a week or so. Great tip about trying it out at the Dealer PRIOR to leaving.
Thanks.
Not yet, too cold to get it too the dealer.

The stock GPS is crap. As soon as you leave a main road it has no idea where you are. Just keeps telling me to turn around. It should re calculate to a new route like all other GPS's.

I agree 100% that it's crap.  If you leave the CD in, it does recalculate if I remember correctly.  I only used it twice and only once with the CD in.  So the way I'm looking at it, if I leave the CD in and listen to the radio, I basically have a fully functioning GPS at that point, that will interrupt the radio for turns.  Am I correct in this assumption?  I am also guessing that this is a good argument for activating the XM radio, as my understanding is that, technically speaking, you should be able to get reception on it virtually anywhere you travel.

You're correct in all your assumptions.  I just leave the CD in all the time.  I never use that for music anyway, I have the XM activated and only listen to that.  The GPS installed is a good basic GPS, not what you'd expect on a $35K motorcycle though.  It will re-route after telling you to U-Turn a couple of times after you get off your route.  Mine works fine, the problem I have with it is you're very limited in how you set your route.  It's point a to point b, period, no way points.  (If it does do this, I haven't been able to figure out how to do it.)  You cannot download routes into it llike with the Garmins.  It's useable, but if you're into route planning, get an aftermarket, like the Zumo.

I have a Zumo, although it's mounted on my wife's bike.  I wouldn't want the built in as my only GPS as you can't download trips, design a route or see a map.  But it does an adequate job of getting you from point A to B+/- a mile or two. LOL!!!  IT has one great advantage... It's built in.  When I'm just riding around I don't have to pop it on and off the bar so it don't get stolen (Don't give me that crap about the security screw on the Zumo... I could break it free of that plastic mount in .3 seconds).

If I'm out not planning on needing GPS and a situation comes up, I grab the CDs, pop it in and least have some ability to navigate. Handy.  Would I pay the money to install it if it didn't come with it?  Never. But since it's there I have made use of it.

Errrm I don't think anyone uses that screw as a measure to stop the GPS being stolen, it's just a quick and easy way to put the GPS on/take it off it's mount, without having to fiddle about with the tiny screw it comes with.

Somewhat surprised that HD still includes this limited ability GPS on these bikes.  It is functional in the most basic way but not easy to use & without a map feature it compares miserably to a most modern GPS systems.

IMHO, it is better than nothing, but very close to it due to the unreliability of it's mapping abilities.

Other than that, hope you enjoy that new bike, mb.

Kinda my point Nige... If anyone used it, it would be worthless as a theft deterint.  So when we park the bike on a trip where my wife has her's mounted we have to pull it, throw it in my Tour-Pak to lock it up, then re-mount it when we come back out to the bikes.  It's a PIA.  That's not to say that I don't love the Zumo or I would recommend someone buy the built in HD over the Zumo, just that it's something to deal with.

I think Garmin used a poor choice of words when they say that it is a "security screw" because it is not a security as in theft deterrent it's only a security in keeping the latch from popping up if you should hit a bump in the road. Then on top of what they call it they put a funny (small @$$) screw in it that takes a special screwdriver to make you think even more that it is a theft deterrent. Funny thing is everyone that has a Zumo has this screwdriver and it can be ordered by anybody from Garmin.

Will echo that Chip.... take a mounted GPS, especially a Zumo, off the bike when you are not on the bike.  Takes about 2 seconds to steal a Zumo, regardless of that screw.

I use the factory GPS.  The street I live on is not on the CD.  I don't care about that.  It's handy to keep from getting lost and has points of interests stored in it, including all of the HD dealers in the country.  It's FAR from fancy but does store your last several destinations.  I like the voice prompts and split screens.  I don't like the crude display, having to have the CD in, that you can't enter address numbers, and that the maps are not as complete as they should be.

I use it to keep from getting lost when riding on every back roads I can find.  Make sure you activate it in your driveway and store that location as "home".

Hey Jim,

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you can enter address numbers or intersections.  Once you've got the street type in you'll see two options on the right. Address for numbers and X-Road for intersections.  It's not obvious, but it's there.

I'll have to check that out.  I didn't think you could put street number in.  I thought that was pretty stupid.  I guess I'm the stupid one.
