If I could generate power a little more efficiently, I'd call the power co-op and tell them to get their frigging power lines off my property!

Power went out Tuesday morning January 27th. We got power back at my house yesterday the 4th and back on here at the office today. We're the fortunate ones, as 75% of this county is still w/o power. I think this county was the hardest hit in the whole state from what I hear.

Fema and the National Guard have taken over the grade school parking lot and set up communication towers, food tents, about a dozen sleeping trailers. Last night when I drove by there were about 40 bucket trucks parked side by side with the booms half raised as they rested in the trailers. Yesterday I counted one convoy of 50 bucket trucks roll in at one time. they had names painted on the side "Pike". I think they are from the East coast somewhere, maybe N.C. There's 100 Kentucky Utilities employees came in yesterday. I've heard estimates of 1,000-1,200 linemen working here in Clinton. That's a lot for a little town of 1,000 people.

I'll probably get boo-ed for what I'm about to say, but, I'll say it anyhow. Sending the National Guard and Fema in is the most ridiculous waste of tax payer money I've ever seen in my life. Kids are driving around in Camo Hummers and HUGE army type vehicles with absolutely nothing to do. I've seen convoys of 50-60 vehicles roll by. The N.G is supposedly here to keep the peace. Fema, I'm not really sure of. They did bring in some much needed generators for nursing homes, critical structures, and government buildings. They were about a week late in doing it in my opinion. I figure if we made do for a week, we don't need them now.

A typical story I heard from my neighbor goes like this. A FEMA employee knocks on the door of a 75 y/o widowed lady far out in the county. They told her who they were, and why they were there. They had a case of water for her, and a crate of food. She politely informed them she was doing a'ight, & that her neighbor had brought her a generator and made sure she's taken care of. Her water well was powered by the Generator, and her refrigerator was working. She had propane heat and was toasty warm. She had 1/2 a beef in the freezer, vegetables put up from the garden, and thanks very much, but take the food and water to someone who needs it. He shook his head and told her people around here are the most independant people he'd ever seen in his life. Whenever he takes a supply truck to hand out food and water at some of this country's cities, chaos breaks out, and it's almost a riot amonge the people, fighting to get the supplies.

Quite the opposite are the linemen who come in to assist. They have been working 24 hours a day in some extreme cold and damp conditions. They have a job to do, restore power, and they are gettin-her done. I've heard of some local people mad because they didn't get power restored quick enough. There's no way they can be everywhere at once. I think they've done a tremendous job.

I suppose the chaos and inefficiencies of FEMA and the N.G are typical of natural disasters like this. I suppose they did assist governments and utility companies in allowing the linemen to do their job. But it sure reminds me of how wastefully the government spends our tax dollars.

I've always believed that a person needs to be able to fend for themselves, especially in situations like this. If nothing else, my beliefs were confirmed.

Ken - I'm glad to hear you have your personal chunk of the earth well under control.   :2vrolijk_21:

Amazing how the weather can effect lives so dramatically, isn't it?  I like your story of the little ole lady being so self sufficient.  And lineman are a pretty tough lot in these circumstances - like firefighters when ground fires get out of control in the west.

Pretty soon, you all will be back to normal with stories good enough to last a lifetime.  I can here it now - 50 years from now - the old folks can tell their grandkids  "I remember back in '09, when...."  :huepfenlol2:  Got to give the old folks good ammo for stories every so often - or the grandkids will think they had it easy!!

Good luck - stay safe - and keep em under control!

Ken;

Your experience w/ the utilities is not unique. Every year there's some sort of calamity involving ice, floods, hail storms, you name it. It's more than any one utility can handle or be expected to. And every year, often many times a year, the companies just start showing up and doing what they can to help. I'm proud that our little power company responds to those emergencies just like the "big boys" and bust their collective asses to get people back in service. I think they are every bit the heroes the more publicized ones are.

Glad that progress is being made and hopefully your county can get back to normal quickly.

Are you in the power industry??

No but I was in highways for 30 years. Was my job to get the utilities moved out of the way of road / bridge jobs. One day they'd be working one of my jobs and the next they'd be off somewhere. I couldn't get pissed when they disappeared to clean up after mother nature.

Ken,

Glad your electricity is back on.

It really gives a renewed appreciation for electricity after you go without it for a week or so.

Ken, glad you have your home-front and beginning to get the office all secured and moving forward.
Can I also commend you guys for getting so involved in your community, checking on those most susceptical if things go bump in the night.
You speak of how well set up you and your country neighbors are, my husband talks to me about this all the time.
When things go bad, if one can get to where the air and water is clean, you can survive.
Those who survived the dirty thirties know how to ensure they have preserves from gardens.

Things ARE different in the country.
In this case, the proof is that different IS a very prepared and secure thing.

Thanks for reporting back to us on KY progress.  The pictures we've seen and the reports we've heard I am sure are nothing to what you are witnessing in person.

Appreciate the concern guys. I'm a country boy, and you know what they say about country boys. A country boy can survive.
It does help to not be broke. I had to go 40 miles south to get gas for the generator today. Even after finding gas I couldn't find a gas can for an additional 40 miles. I bought all 8 they had. I've got 60 gallons now, and that would run me 4-5 days. In Union City Tn, traffic was backed up at ever gas station. Most of the cars were from Kentucky.

On the way back I stopped by an electrical contractor I do business with. Their phone was ringing off the wall about generators. The Generac air cooled 20KW model with a Briggs and Straton 35 HP engine can be bought for $4,000 or so. The one I bought is more in the $9,500 line. It's a 25 KW propane fired generator with a 53 HP Ford water cooled engine. . It will output 100 amps or so. That's enough to do what I need to do. It's not the cheapest route but if the power goes out, I want this thing to run. The next best part is, they have a truck load of generators coming in from Minnesota, and will be here tomorrow. Mine was able to get shoved on the truck as we spoke. The install will take a little time, but, by monday or Tuesday, I should be hooked up. It will have an automatic switch to disconnect off public power before energizing.

It may be overkill to install this generator, but, it's worth it to me to be pretty much self sufficient here. Now, to just stock up on ammo, and I'm good to go.  ;D

Dont forget you have a home in SoFlo. ...right Jorge.  ;D
