Deluxe Saddlebag Chaps with Storage Bags
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:20:46 AM »

Anyone familiar with these?   They look functional and a great concept.  Curious to know about clearance between lid and seat after you mount these?

Kind of like the idea.  Looks like a quick release to take the upper bag on and off too.  With the upper bag in place never get the saddlebag lid open with a tour pak on though.

Don,

I sometimes use a tourpak (detachable) on my SERK when touring...which I had a concern with also.

The sales pitch claim from the website:
They’re expandable, and will not interfere with saddlebag operation or tour pack.
· Easy to install, ten minutes without drilling or modifying bike
· Also available as Lid Cover only.
· Storage bags clear trunks
· Easy access bags
· Secure, but easy on, easy off

I have the HD Sunray heated seat on my SERK and clearance is tight...wasn't an issue with the stocker...I sent an inquiry to Saddlemen to see how close these really mount.  Haven't seen these in person...curious to know if anyone had.

Please share whatever else they might tell you.  Neat idea to perhaps make a long weekender for more than solo riding a possibility without having to load up a King tour pak.

With the straps being on the paint, I can foresee scratches and/or paint wear...

They will definately scratch the paint on your hard saddlebags. In my mind, that's to high a price to pay for a little convenience.

Ride safely,

If you need that much more storage get a Bushtec.  :2vrolijk_21:

 :D good one Jerry

If they would not be harmful to the bike, I like the idea.  For me, that would be handy, of course, as long as it was also easy on, easy off.

i try n protect my paint with those rubber anti-slip rubber sheets, but the best way not to scratch ur paint is to make damn sure nothing is touching/rubbing on it.

I have the HD Sunray heated seat on my SERK and clearance is tight...wasn't an issue with the stocker...I sent an inquiry to Saddlemen to see how close these really mount.  Haven't seen these in person...curious to know if anyone had.

I got a reply from Saddlemen...my inquiry was regarding the seat & bag/lid clearance as I stated above.  The answer is very much what I expected to receive:

"Our technician believes it should not be a problem.

Our chaps fit snuggly, but there is no way to guarantee how it will work without seeing your set up.  This is one of those issues that we sometimes have to leave up to the discretion and judgment of the bike owner.

Best regards,

Saddlemen"

I'm going to keep a lookout for these to see them in person before plunking any money down.  I like the idea of having just that little extra storage without having to mount the tour pak for a weekender/solo ride.  The chafing is a concern that I have also...thought about using some of that clear "stone guard" material that you can buy in sheets and custom cut/fit to save the paint.  Was told that you can safely remove this material with a heat gun later.  I've been meaning to buy some of that stuff anyway for my streetrod ('31 chevy/not the bike by the same name).  Also thought of looking into "adjusting" the clearance of the saddlebag lid to seat area to overcome that issue as well...not sure how to do that just yet...I need to look over that area when the siberian cold stuff finally moves out of here.  May need to start a thread on that "adjustment" topic.

If anyone happens to see these in the future, please post your observations...thanks.

These will also scratch the paint. There is no way around it. Only way is to use 3M protective on the lid before installing.

Ride safely,
