Breaking the Front Motor Mount
« on: September 29, 2005, 09:38:12 AM »

I brought my 2005 SEEG into the shop since I had to jump it to get it started.  They found a broken front motor mount, and the bolt actually hit and dented the regulator causing it to go bad.  Charging system, etc, is all back to normal now.  The question that I have it the front motor seems to break a lot on the touring bikes.  Is there a replacement or aftermarket mount that will still give the ride and hold up better?  The tech at HD told me "they all break" on touring bikes and that it's expected.  We checked my friend's stock 88" 05 RoadGlide which has 2K miles and it was broken as well.  Thanks in advance.

I've had five FLHT's (2 RK's, 2 Ultra's, 1 SEEG), all with high miles and I have never had a broken front mount.  Probably just a random failure.

With the added torque of the 103 motor and high performance clutch, you would think they could have beefed up the motor mounts.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

The only non OE motor mount replacements I've ever seen get much press are the Velva-ride kits.  Never used one and don't know much about them so really can't offer more than the name.  Do a google search and you'll find out more.

I just had my front motor mount replaced on my 05 SEEG when it was in for a rocker box leak.
Watch the gap between your rear brake pedal and the front pipe shield. Mine was actually hitting and making a ratlle sound during idle.

The Dealer ( Mike's in CT) said the fix was a common one on 103' motor bikes.
Common or not it was a warrantee item so I didn't care!

I know what you mean about the clearance between the brake lever and the heat shield.  I had to modify the Thunderheader heat shield a bit to make it fit

Unless I'm totally out in left field somewhere, I believe that the mount carries a 1979 or 1980 part number.  In other words, they've been using the same mount for 25 years.  Surely elastomeric materials have improved drastically over that period of time, especially the latest urethanes.  The only option I've ever seen is the Velva-Ride.  They claim improved performance and durability, but of course no one claims the opposite.  They also have "improved" stabilizer links as well.  Try a google search for "motor mounts" +harley-davidson.

I wonder just how much this happens [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Or if its a bad product run. [smiley=nervous.gif] 20k on mine and still okay, warrantied or not I'd rather not have to go in for it. I would think the wrenches would be eyeballing this item at every service [smiley=nervous.gif]

I'm not sure if and when the front motor mounts are expected to fail.

I had approx. 9,000 on my bike when the motor mount failed. That 103 had gobs of tourque and I'm sure that contributes....

HAD????

I saw your other post about the crash...are you keeping the bike?  My Deuce is still in the shop for a mid July crash...they took almost 6 weeks for the estimate.  I won't be going back to Auburn for work like this.  When I bought the bike, it came with service through 10K so I still have a 7.5 and a 10 there.  I do those and nothing else.

Yes , my plans are to keep the bike. It is not that I don't want to ride again. The painted parts will take 6-8 weeks from the local dealer and, by then,
riding season may be over in New England. I will shoot for Myrtle Beach in May as the first big run and get on the bike as soon as I can when the weather breaks in '06.

I'm going back and forth about putting the bike stock or getting someone to paint a nice Screamin' eagle head on each side of the gas tank. The third silver color used in the paint job may look good.  I may just get it back to stock looks. The bike isn't bad at all. It has damage on the front fender, inner/outer fairings, tank and one saddlebag. The motor, pipes, front end , etc. is all untouched. The "crash" bars or engine mount as H-D calls them, did quite a good job protecting the bike.

My other bike was a Deuce that was hopped up with 1550 custom gold leaf paint and lbs. of chrome. That bike is in Alabama now. A friend of mine bought it when I got the SEEG.

I went through two mounts first was @17k and the replacement failed at 24K. Both were covered by warranty, but that's not really the issue. These were on FLTRSEI2, and there seems to be a subtle design issue here, at least on the SE engines (95"&103"), probably old technology as someone said here. I have experienced the dealers really checking the mounts and reporting the results to you now. Hopefully this will not be another just live with it item like the cam tensioners. Bottom line, keep an eye on them and request they check and report if using the dealership.
