How loud are the D&D Fatcats with quiet baffles?
« on: February 21, 2009, 12:43:44 AM »

Do you lose anything in performance by going with the quiet baffles is my second question?  How will the sound with quiet baffles compare with the Fullsac 2.25" baffles I have in my current mufflers?  Anyone listen to them side by side before?

I case anyone has any answers, I have another question to add.  I read somewhere today or yesterday that there may be some kind of problems with tuning on the dyno with the quiet baffles, or at least that was my take on it.  Is there a problem or did I misinterpret something?

I'd think you'd find the Fatcat with the Q baffle louder than the 2.25 Fullsacs, especially if you run the Fullsacs with the stock headers. I have friends with built bikes that run Rineharts and aftermarket TDs 'cause they found Fatcats w/Q baffles too loud.

I've lost count of how many times we've been down this pig path.  "Loud" to me might be Obnoxiously, Overbearingly Noisy to someone else, whereas Loud to someone else might sound like a stock bike to me..........and all ranges in between.  "Loud" "Is What It Is" to each person.  I don't have a clue what "Loud" is to anyone else but me and in some cases, folks with whom I frequently ride.  My hearing is shot anyway.......so hehehehe.   :)
I have the D&D Fat Cat with Performance Baffle on my 117cid, and to me it makes the sweetest sound.  The motorcycle was louder when it was a 107cid with true duals and Rush mufflers with 2.25" baffles.  I think the D&D Fat Cat sounds great, has a substantial "bark," and is the best performing and certainly best looking 2>1 system on the market.
Can't speak to quiet baffles for the Fat Cat beyond speculation that if they are anything like the quiet baffles for the V&H exhaust series, then getting an accurate A/F reading on the dyno will be difficult.........unless these data are measured from the 02 bungs.  On the V&H QBs, there was a plug that prevented insertion of the A/F probe.  Sure, you can drill through it, but then any "quiet" that was there to begin with "isn't" any longer.

Well thank god that someone else likes loud, I have the V&H true duals. Had the loud baffles on. First time I cranked it up, instant woodie. Had a few noise issues with some niehbors so I switched to the quiet baffles. There was a possible minor hp uptick due to the increased backpressure but the pipes just did'nt have the growl that I liked. Anyway the niehbors that I had a noise issue with, they're kids ride around the niehborhood with thier atvs and they scream pretty good so, I'm back to the loud baffles . :2vrolijk_21:......................................Fuzz

Loud is good.  I love the sound of both of my bikes.   :2vrolijk_21:

Henry - why is this?

I am getting ready to order a D&D 2-1 and was planning on ordering the quiet baffle.

Like he said, what I heard was there was a problem with not being able to insert the A/F probe, since the baffle was in the way.  I decided to go with the louvered baffle in mine and you can always add the quiet baffle for $40 or less if you can get a discounted price.  They are a little louder than I was expecting to go with on this bike, but the sound is bursting with power and I'm just about sporting wood with every crank of the throttle.  It's definitly music to my ears, but my only concern with the sound is others...not myself.  If you control yourself in the inappropriate places and leave the heaving cranking to the highway, they are probably acceptable.  If you go ripping through neighborhoods, there will likely be some irritated people.  I'm going to try to limit myself where necessary and let her rip when possible.  I'm not sure if there is a reason for this or not, but I rode my friends 08 SEUC today, and his wasn't nearly as loud as mine, and he also has the Fat Cats with the louvered baffles.

I had a fatcat on my last bike.  Street Glide with a Headquarters 95 engine  I started with a fatcat standard baffle, then changed to the quiet baffle after some complaints from neighbors ( i go to wortk at 4:30 in the morning ).  If I were to buy another fatcat I would get the quiet baffle.  I was really glad I changed.  Neighbors still complained and called the police on me.

I have a 103 with slightly more than a 10.1 compression ratio. I switched from VH pro pipes to fat cats and the noise went down, but still louder than I'd like. It's definitely louder (higher pitch?) than my buddy's 110.

He has an 07 SEUC. He switched his Fat Cats (with ghost pipe) from the standard to the quiet baffle. The first switch was to a "performance" quiet baffle, and it was actually louder. The second switch was to the other quiet baffle. He believes it is quieter and claims he measured 6dB reduction (96 to 90) from behind the bike at 1500 rpm. He's happy. I have not yet ridden behind him, so I don't know.

So - sometime ago this article was posted here, you can see right through either baffle - why would it be difficult to insert a probe then?

And if the new pipes all come with o2 bungs, do tuners just tap into the bungs for tuning?

After doing my cams and pipes (current project) I might actually consider getting the bike dyno tuned instead of the old fashioned way (butt and spark plug check).

20-30 years the only dyno around was the "take it for a ride and check the plugs dyno".
Wasn't really interested in what eh dyno sheets said anyway - always seemed you could take the same bike - put it on 5 different dynos and get 5 different results.

My bike runs good now and the changes I have done to the map were a major improvement and solved the issues I had with decel pop and the throttle " roll on - roll off issues between 3000-4000 rpm.

I talked to the local tuner this weekend, forgot to ask about the probe and Fat Cats though. But I did ask about the map, told them I wanted whatever map they come up with, the reply was we don't usually do that but no problem.

I didn't know they were straight through.  Didn't know anything at all about the D&D Quiet Baffles, actually, but what I do know, from personal experience with them on my 02 Ultra, is the Quiet Baffles for the Vance and Hines Big Shots Long for Baggers are not straight through.  There is a plug at the innermost portion of the baffles, which prevents proper insertion of an A/F probe.  My whole point was IF the D&D quiet baffle is like the Vance and Hines Quiet Baffles, then proper insertion of the A/F probe is impossible unless the tuner drills through the baffles plugs, thereby negating any "quiet" the baffles provide, OR, O2 sensor bung plugs are removed and A/F measurements are taken through the existing O2 sensor bungs.

Rod tried to get the bung plugs out of my FatCat, preferring to measure A/F that way, but they weren't budging, so he used the long A/F probe, since I have the louvered baffles.

I know a really good tuner down in Hanceville, AL that would be happy to expertly tune your machine, Duane.   :2vrolijk_21:

I will be ordering D&D Fat Cats, quiet baffle, slant cut (matches the saddle bag angle) today or tomorrow. If they come with the bung plugs I'll make sure they are removable before installing (never seize)

I was under the impression that I could replace the baffles in my Fat Cat with quiet baffles for about $40, and I'm pretty sure I saw that somewhere, but now I can't seem to find the baffles listed anywhere.  I think I can handle the pipe as is, but I thought at some point, I'd fork over the $40 and try the quiet baffle and see how it sounds.  Has anyone seen a listing for the quiet baffle separately?
