April Fools Day 4 years ago. My girlfriend and I went to a beer bash with a band at the local fire hall. Nice charity event. We went with the neighbor couple that live across the street from me and about 5 other couples that they knew and I had met on many occasions. My neighbor (her) and I are always torturing each other with little practical jokes. My girlfriend at the time was about as sweet and innocent as they come and NOONE would ever expect her to be a part of a practical joke. Everybody was let in on what was going to happen, except of course my neighbor. I had my girlfriend cozy up with her and act like she was very troubled over something and needed someone to confide in. She told her that she was pregnant, and that I did not know about it yet, and that the baby was not mine, but she really loved me and was going to tell me it was mine. Knowing my neighbor very well, I anticipated that she wouldn't be able to keep this to herself, and she proceeded to spread this info to everyone we were with. Everyone told her exactly the opposite of what she was expecting...that they didn't see any problem with her deceiving me and she should just stay out of it and let us be happy together. Okay, now it's time to send the girlfriend off for a walk to the bathroom to free me up. I got a real quick, "I need to talk to you right now" in my ear, from my neighbor. We walked a few feet away from our table and she started telling about the "low-life b$#%ch's" scheme. I held up one finger, then 2, then on the 3rd finger the entire table and I yelled "April Fools Vicki". She proceeded to let us all know what a-holes we were.
But now she is always on guard with me. When I called her at work to let her know that her next door neighbor had a SWAT team at the house, along with local police, FBI, CIA, postal inspector, and about every other agency imaginable, and that they were filling SUV's with computers and boxes of documents they were removing from their home, she didn't believe me. I told her which neighbors were home to witness this, and she said that I had coached the other people to go along with this and she just didn't believe a word a said. She called to apologize about a week later when she read about it in the newspaper. These folks were apparently into a little bit of everything...illegal check cashing, illegally sending funds overseas, some sort of fraud on the computer...I doubt that I'll ever get the entire real story on everything they were involved in, but I do know the one guy also got arrested for attempted murder. That part was plain as day on the news report. It's always nice to see your neighbor on TV in handcuffs.
