Beg to differ DAWG.  Got a 2006 GM suv with a little over 30k on it.  Never, ever been back to the dealer for anything.  Had three oil changes & put Mobil 1 in it.  Thats all.  Wish I could say the same for my HD.

Beg to differ all you want. I bet your GM doesn't vibrate like your Harley either. You are comparing apples to oranges. I still think it is best to have your 1k done by a pro. What will take you a weekend to do properly takes a real pro ( not a butcher) about 3.5 hours to do it right. Get it done right the first time and just hope you are good to go.

I have been very lucky with warranty issues in the past. I think HD had some problems on the line the last couple of years. I hope they get their chit together and continue to build the best bike available to the American public.

When my 2000 SERG was new i was offered a prefered maintenance program....all services prepaid up to 20,000 miles. After 25 years of rolling around the garage florr, I decided to treat myself and my bike to professional service. It turned out to be a horror show...a bout a week or so after getting thr bike, the MoCo had a clutch cable recal, i brought the bike in the prescribed day and they changed out the clutch cable. I returned home and noticed the the rear exhust hanger nut ans bolt were missing...had one in tool box...so I rolled around on the garage floor and replaced it...hhhmmm....so at 1000 i brought in the bike dropped it off, and returned the next day to pick it up...got home loaded the bike with some clothes and my wife...and off we went on my freshly serviced bike....got about 40 miles from out in the middke of the state and I noticed the the bike felt like it was skating around on ice  (not likely in So Fl )...stopped to check things out...after a quick inspection, I found the rear axel nut had not been tightened and the the axel adjusture was flopping around and hanging down....
That was first ever in 30+ plus years of riding of having a PROFESSONIAL service done to my bike....and it was the last!!!
I returned to the dealership several days later...need to cool off before returning....and got most of my money back from the prepaid card. I ordered a manual , the sreamin eagle parts supplement...and now roll around on the garage do al own my own work again
I totllay agree witht the do it your self thing....NO ONE loves my bike like I do...I usually take the bike for a good ride and get it hot...come home...drain all the fluids...and then let the bike sit and cool off over night...next day after work....i adjust clutch...set belt tension. lube all cables..take up any slack if needed...fill all the holes with there respctive fluids...wash the bike...then a good detailing :orange
I offer the same services to a couple less mechanically inclined friends of mine...I tell them go to the dealer and see what it costs for the peticular service...and I will do it for half of that price...good deal for them and good deal for me !!

Harley Dealers and their shops fall into the "stuck between a rock and hard place category". I am a confirmed motor head and have been enjoying and working on bikes, hot rods, daily rides, etc for 40+ years. Part of that pleasure is learning more and more as you work on your "toys". You will also assemble a nice collection of tools and equipment along the way. But as you grow older, you want to spend more time riding and less time wrenching. Plus there is also the need to establish a relationship with a dealer to deal with warranty issues, recalls, and repairs that you are not able to perform. Unfortunately, most of the time when I have shop work done, I will find something wrong after they are finished. It has varied from incomplete, incorrect, sloppy, dangerous and outright fraud. I do a lot of touring with friends, and it seems that any time there is a breakdown, the first thing you hear is "Damm, I just got this f***in bike out of the shop for a complete service and inspection!!!" So my advise is, as others have said, get a shop manual, learn to do as much as you can on your own, keep accurate records, but throw some work your dealers way when you can and hopefully a good relationship will develop. Time to get back to the garage!

Again it all falls back on getting the "RIGHT" mechanic to work on your bike. If you have one that is great if not buy the books and go at it. I still say the 1k is the most important of all.
