HPI Oil Cooler Mounting Kit
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:19:39 PM »

First, details of the device can be found at http://www.horsepowerinc.net/products/oil-cooler-mounting-bracket/

I spoke of this device in a post in the FLHTCUSE section.  Seems it was backordered for quite awhile, so in order to get the Green Bike out the door and start break-in, Rod installed a chrome filter mount with a JAGG oil cooler adapter.  The HPI adapter came in while I was still breaking in the new engine, so decided to finish break-in and have it installed after final tune.  Here's a few pictures of the HPI device.

Machining bungs on the bottom of the mount.  One could possibly install the nipples here and put the plugs in the side ports and run this mount with a stock oil cooler.

That looks like a good one. I had a similar unit from jagg on my 00 RK but it was 2 pieces before the filter and would loosen up and seep oil so had to keep tightening it.

Henry - what was the purpose of adding this?

Hi Duane,
This unit has larger, less tortuous, oil pathways, therefore it flows more oil, faster, through the oil cooler, which keeps oil temps down, which keeps engine temps down.  Max I've seen is 230 in heavy city traffic with 75 degrees ambient.  Once underway again, it quickly dropped back to 220.  That's with a single, six row JAGG oil cooler on the left down tube.  The entire stock oil cooling system has been removed.  In my opinion, it was ineffective, particularly for a larger than stock engine, due to the vortex created by the wake of the front wheel, and the cooler fins get obstructed with sand, dirt, mud, etc.

I had a HD chrome filter mount with a JAGG oil cooler adapter prior to this, but the oil pathways are much smaller and very tortuous in comparison to this one.

So, to directly answer your question, the purpose of this device is to keep my engine temperature down.
