Am I the only one...
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:23:07 PM »

...that actually likes the small tinted windshield (wind "deflector" as most seem to call it) that comes standard on the SERK?  I never really had a problem with it from day one... a little buffeting was noticed but nothing that bad.  However, I did install a fork air baffle (58520-79TC) over the winter based on the recommendation from another thread on this site and after that installation (I've been able to ride quite a bit over the last few weeks) even that little bit of "jitter" seems to be gone.

I'm 5'10" and wear a full-face helmet all of the time (actually a modular).  I've seen lots of people recommend to ditch the stock shield and go with something larger.  Not saying that wouldn't work as well but I tried the shield off of a standard Road King on mine and didn't care for the look (personal preference).  Just wondering how far into the minority I really am...  ;)

I just did not like the short windshield. Talked with the folks at Clearview and ended up ordering one of the "Blemished" windshields at a great discount. When I received the shield I had a hard time trying to find the blemish. I could not be more pleased with the standard height recurve windshield from Clearview on the Roadking. Guess it is truly personal preference that dictates what we choose.

The stock one was bad.  The Clearview recurve I got wasn't much better, still eye-ball rattling buffetting.  I thought the expirement was over at that point, but I'll try the fork baffle next and am thinking about a Vanillazilla.

With your helmet on, you won't notice much. I rarely wear one (I know, I know) The stock windshield cause the air to hit me right on the glasses bouncing all the time. Very annoying!

I am also fine with the wind breaker on the SERK. I have added the baffle on the day of the delivery, and it makes all the difference in the world.

Ride safely,

Majorrocky: I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer...but, what is this fork air baffle? Do you have a pic? Sure would be appreciated? Muddy

BTW: I don't mind the stock W/S... I'm just thinking, a tad taller one would be better for the long hauls :2vrolijk_21:

Here's a picture that I took of mine installed.  The picture was originally very dark so I lightened it up quite a bit so that you can see the baffle.  It's still not a great pic so if it's hard to tell let me know and I'll take another one the next sunny day we get here.

You can look at the picture on Harley's web page (see the part number above) but it's hard to tell how it mounts in that pic.

It mounts to pre-existing holes in the fork and only costs about $25.

Wasn't there some talk a year or so ago about the lower fork baffle and how it deflects the air away from the motor and has a tendency to raise oil temps?

Just thought I'd throw that out there for discussion.

Hadn't heard that one...  I would certainly be interested to know more if anyone has details.  I'd certainly rather live with the few "jiggles" than burn the engine up... :o

There was some talk about adverse affects of the deflector and I don't remember anyone having any issues they could really attribute to them. FWIW, I and many have used them for years and suffered no ill affects.

It's only going to move air when you are at speed, and that isn't when these get too hot; it's when they are sitting or moving slow.

Very interesting...in regards to the baffle and how it may deflect air away from the motor....would sure like to hear more on the subject? In regards to deflecting air...in the thread a joining this thread (aux side lights), I too want to add the aux.front side light..but, I am leaning towards, using Visor Trim on all lights (just my preference). Having said this, this last weekend, we cruised from Monterey down Hwy.1 to Hearst Castle, 46 to Paso Robles and home on 101. Well, on 101 North bound... late in the day, we had a heck of a head wind. Q. anyone had any ill effects using the (Visor Trim Rings)? Needless to say, looks like they could have a tenacy, to possibly create a up lift on the front end? Thanks in advance!! Muddy

Sorry if I may have hijacked a tad....I'll move it if need be.... ;)

I have no issue with the stock windshield.  This is the only bike I've had with one, so that might be it.  I also ride with a full face helmet and have had no issue with the wind or any intolerable buffeting up to and over 100 mph.

I have no plans to increase the size of it, but do occasionally take it off for short trips.

I kept the stock wind shield too. The largest wind shield I had ever used was the Windvest on my SE FatBoy, and that was only a 14". When I got the SE RoadKIng, I thought the wind shield was huge.

I kept the stock shield and have been thinking of the Kuryakyn or someother fuller, more diverse shields. Not in the budget for now, so, stock it is.
