Need Help Setting Up My 09 FLHTCUSE4
« on: March 15, 2009, 07:22:23 AM »

Hello I am replying to this post as I cant seem to work out how to start my own?

This is my first so please dont shout at me. Anyways I have owned and rode 7  GL1800 goldwings, then I got  fed up and as we were not  touring at the time cos my wifes Ma was ill and dieing in the hospital . I went out and bought a HD CVO fat boy 2006 loved it made me smile but. Then after Christines Ma passed. We wanted to start touring agagin and I suggested a 2009 HD FLHTCUSE4 we bought one and called it Ruby. Having looked at it sat in the garage for 5 months too much salt on roads we rode it FRIDAY 13TH March  for the first time. see www.bikerpals.co.uk
Here is what I said to my friends on a email....

"Well we managed to finally take "RUBY" out Friday the 13th, for a 110 mile debut ride, stopping of  a couple of times in lay by's to adjust something's, but Christine says she felt like a "vibrating sardine! See pics.......she said she cant remember the last time she had to keep her legs open that wide for so long!

Bottom line is can anyone send me pics and info on any ideas of making the tour pack go back further, dont like the slider type someone posted it looks naff! and Heath Robinson, also can anyone tell me any info of what to do to stop her pegs digging in my rear legs...

I need some help from u experienced HD guys as I am struggling and dont really want to have to back to a Wing without giving "RUBY" a bigger chance.

HELP  PLEASE

Hey there Big Derek,

Welcome aboard as a new member... Your new ride looks awesome and I love the matching shoes!

You'll find this site very informative.  Regarding your wife's comfort on the bike, have a look under the tour pack to ensure your dealer changed the position of it from the "shipping" position to the "riding" position.  There are 2 spots for the tour pack to sit on the rack and I've seen some new bikes get delivered to the customer and the tech forgot to change the position.

I believe the '09's come with the tour pack positioned further back than previous years, but if not I'm sure your dealer can fix you up with a re-location rack for it.

That's all I have to suggest.

Hope you get it worked out, 'cause you & the wife are really going to love that bike!

Take care & ride safe,

Hello and welcome to the site!

Please take a look at this thread:

And leave some comments!

We are trying to put a meeting together in May 2009 and it would be cool to meet you there!

Ride safely,
Louis

Regarding to the Tourpak location and foot board position, there are several options already provided with the bike (unlike in prior years), and there are several options available from H-D accessories, or even after market. To find out about what other people did, use the search function of this site. To get the best results, first click on "HOME" (top left of the navigation buttons) then enter "tourpak" into the search box (top right). That will give you the search across all board of the site.
There is one thread starting of with a similar problem: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=31643.0
And another one dealing with a relocation kit: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=34460.0
Maybe these help!

I ordered George Anderson's relocator kit, mentioned elsewhere in this site but it wasn't quite what I wanted so I sent it back and made the changes myself. Hope that helps.

Hi there thank you for your advice, please could you tell me why you did not like the George.... Kit? IS drilling the tour pack bar holder base safe? I just wonder if it weakens it having more holes drilled in it? Sorry to sound thick but after working on Honda Goldwings I have to find my way round the CVOSE4 and as yet I am not to cool with it.  But if I can get Christine comfortable I will be able to start a love affair with my new HD I hope.

The crash bar idea sounds very feasible I am in Fort Laudedale next week for 3 days I may well try and buy some whilst in the USA.
What are the grabrails a chap is mentioning on the Forum? He says you can fit them when the tour pack is moved back?
Do you have any pictures are more info that my help me and other 2009 E Glide owners?

I still chit myself every time I get off the bike as it go's onto the side stand that must  take some getting use to? Its far more over than my fat boy was?

thanking you

Big D :)

Hello and welcome to the site!

Hi Louis

Thanks for saying hello i am trying to sort this  comfort issue, but its not easy, I will be looking at the tourpack suggestions that i have read on this forum and also look at the rear footboards. When you ask a UK dealer you may as well talk to the wall!

Cheers

Big D

WOULD LOVE to do st Tropez been there many times on our Goldwings. But never on a HD?

There are many different tourpack relocator kits available (George Anderson, Harley, Kuryakyn, and others)  Search the web for tourpack relocators and you will find some more.  As far as her pegs digging into the back of your legs, you might want to try floorboard relocators.  I have them from www.harleygoodies.com/hdf on the front of mine and I thought about getting them for the rear to try to solve the same problem you are having.  Get a set for the front while you are at it.  They make the ride for you much more comfortable.  You also mentioned something that sounds like a kickstand problem.  Check out this thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=30120.msg489543#msg489543.  There were several bikes that had the wrong kickstand bracket installed and it makes the bike lean further than it should.

Hi Thanks, for all the advice you chaps are giving me I will have a go at this tourpack when I get back from my USA/Carribean/USA holiday we go Tomorrow Tuesday. Then I hope I can make the HD a happy bike for me and our lass lol:) I have got the bracket number for the side stand issue and will be calling the Suppliying HD dealer later today.
Cos when I put "RUBY" on her stand it always looks like she is going down!!!

One other thing that might help with passenger comfort. This CVO is my 7th Ultra and I've made this easy alteration on each one giving a bit more width for the passenger seat width. You can remove the rear speakers and drill new holes and move each speaker half an inch outward giving the passenger an extra inch in width.

Hi Egultrac, Well what a day there was two of us working on my CVO and we printed off what you said re re drilling the 4 holes in the tour pack bracket. All I can say is your bike must be different to mine!

First of all you mentioned 2" more room you can't drill that far back from the stock holes as there just is not that much room. Also the rear holes hit the chrome horse shoe bracket we did drill them though and the black base plate drilling all four holes and filing them out . Remember the original holes have the nuts welded in place ready for the bolts.
So we had to grind the rear nuts a slight flat on to go near the chrome horse shoe bracket, "Not very easy!
We persisted and the continued now with 4 fresh holes which in effect would give us about 3/4" more room when completed.

Then we lowered the tourpack into position ready to drill the new holes in it! "Horror we find that there is a little rectangular square in the middle of the  tourpack with horizontel raised ribbed lines, these go in place on the black bracket and the chrome horse shoe bracket, thus stopping the tourpack from being put futher back! We could have raised the bracket making a gap between the bracket and the tour pack but that would have looked awful and perhaps unsafe so we re fitted everything back to stock. Its for sure that you can't move or redrill or re vamp the stock bracket in any shape or form to make more room.... I can only think you have a different model  bike than me. (or at least a different tourpack fitting bracket)

We then looked at the suggestion of moving the rear speakers and to re drill them We agreed the gain is to neglegable so we left them.

Then we fitted the nice new proper tourpack chrome hinges.... All OK happy with them. :)

Then we fitted the rear rack spoiler light and that went OK and happy with that. :)

Then we fitted the chrome speaker surrounds OK happy with them. :)

Finlay on re fitting the seat I dropped the screw and washer that fasten the rear part of the seat to the rear fender! cant find it anywhere so its not finished. need to find it or get another.../

UNFORTUNATLEY we did struggle  a little as all the HD is AF spanner and such and the nuts and bolts are AF we of course in the UK are metric and its not easy tooling up for them all especially nut and bolts taps and dies tourxe screw's etc...

So I am a little disappointed in the fact that the tourpack has not been a success guess I will keep looking into a fix for it...just so we can have a little more room.. The Kuryakyn bracket don't work cos I was at my local HD shop and they were struggling with a 2009 Glide too!

egultrac

I was wondering if you did this on an 09.  I would like to use your idea to move my tour pak back an 1.5".  But after looking at the metal plate I am wondering if there is some changes made to the 09/10's.
I follow you on the 3/4 on the plate and 3/4 on the pack, could you give some more detail on the other mods required.
Thanks
