It was just confirmed to me that there will definitely be an Ultra SE for 2010.
I guess it is tough to stop producing a best seller!

Also, and this is certainly no surprise that the MoCo is changing the pipes on all touring models in 2010 due to the numerous problems occurring with the '09's.

What is surprising though is that they are replacing the pipes on all touring medels to a 2 into 1 configuration... Hopefully they'll have a phantom pipe to even things up??? :nixweiss:

I'm not so sure that the Touring models will be going to a 2:1 exhaust configuration. Based on the CARB certification http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onroad/cert/hmc/2010/harleydavidson_m0050160_1584-1688-1802_0d5_hn.pdf
all 2010 models will have SFI (Sequential Fuel Injection), TWC (Three way catalytic converters) and 2O2S (2 O2 sensors). I interpret the reference to "TWC" to mean that ALL 2010 models will be going to an exhaust system with 3 Catalytic Converters. Essentially using the same exhaust configuration that was exclusive to the 2009 CVO Touring bikes (1 CC in the header and one in each of the mufflers) on all 2010 bikes sold in California. The real question is whether they will limit the 3 CC system to Cal or adopt it for all their 2010 models.

The 2009 non-Cal. CVO models only had the CC in the header and not in the mufflers. It'll be a real shame if all bikes succumb to a 3 CC system as that will crush the performance of HD engines regardless of their engine displacement. Kinda like the early 70's all over again, but just applied to bikes. There's gonna be alot of pipes with platinum sitting around in people's garages and attics after they switch out their pipes or bore out the CCs. Sounds like a new business to me as all that platinum is going have some serious value to someone.

A "three way catalytic converter" refers to the 3 gases the catalytic converter is designed to change: CO, HC, and NOx.

Under high temperature, the CO is oxidized into CO2; the HC compound is turned into H2O and CO2; and the NOx is deoxidized into Nitrogen.

I'm glad you came back with that explanation so timely.  Without your post, it's hard to say what direction this post could have headed with more speculation on the exhaust systems.

Thanks for the correction and accurate info. Is there any information available on where the OP got the information suggesting the 2010 Touring bikes will be going to a 2:1 exhaust? Do you suppose this would include the CVOs?

I'm still waiting to hear what problems there were with the 09 exhaust.  I still don't remember hearing anyone with complaints on this system, other than of course the catalytic converters...but we know those aren't going away in the stock system, no matter what they do.

Going with a 2 into 1 on touring bikes would be disastrous and the Mo Co understands that. Most owners of HD touring bikes love the balanced look of the dual exhaust setup. Can anyone imagine a Hemi Challenger or Mustang GT with a single exhaust? I know some riders like the 2 into 1 setup and I've tried it on a past Ultra but from a strictly cosmetic point of view it did nothing for me. The left exhaust already is a type of ghost pipe because most of the exhaust flows through the right side. The new '09 exhaust is cleaner, mildly cooler, is far less prone to exhaust leaks and so far I haven't of cracked headers on the new setup. With all the changes to '09 touring models it is difficult to believe the MoCo will make any major changes (other than to the engine) for the next several years.

On the other hand, who really knows?? I'm just looking forward to seeing the 2010 CVO Ultra and CVO Streetglide!!
Well said. I second that.

Ride safely,
Louis

Don, hate to be an alarmist, but it looks like someone stole the left muffler off both your bikes...or is that the 2010 upgrade kit?  Seriously though, when I put the 2-1 on mine, I didn't like not having the left muffler, so I ordered one...but by the time it arrived, I had gotten used to it with one muffler.  That extra muffler didn't come cheap and I probably could have done without it.  Besides, it's not the easiest part to get to for cleaning.  I'm sure that if the MOCO ever stops putting a left muffler on, we can count on them to produce a ghost pipe for the other side (at additional expense).  You can also count on it that the exhaust system they put on stock will be more than worthy of replacing with something else anyway, so you'll just have one less stock muffler sitting in your garage.  There will still be AM companies out there making duals for the bikes also.

OH NO!!!    :huepfenlol2:

Actually....  when I made the change on the red bike now a couple years ago it was a hard thing to do.  I'd used true duals forever.  Loved the more open right side, slightly improved ease of maintenance and the overall look.  Had used the old White Brothers E Series mufflers on bike after bike with dual headpipes because they could be tuned so well.  Great mufflers for torque.

Then the mufflers went the way of the dinosaurs.

After my last set of E Series had a baffle break inside one of them had to make a change.  Was doing the engine work on the red bike around that time and really fussed over the 2-1 change.  It was a hard choice to make.  Was worried I'd never get used to the look.

Took about a week.

I'm sure it helped that the damn things run so well.  I like the sound too.  But in about a week's time I was accustomed to the change and just fine with it.  Liked it so well put it on the SERG after getting it.

I never entertained doing the ghost pipe though.  Paying for something else to clean and maintain that does absolutely nothing wasn't an option for me.  I'm too lazy for that.
