Cornering of the 2009 Touring bikes
« on: March 27, 2009, 01:08:11 PM »

I test rode a 2009 Road Glide.  I have owned 3 other road glides and was curious as to how the new frame coupled with the wider rear tire would corner.  I found it more difficult to corner in the short test ride I took.  I would be like to hear how others feel about the cornering of the 2009 touring models.

My 09 SEUC is the best handling Harley I have ever owned.

My stock 09 RG is an amazingly well balanced ride, handles sooo well in the turns!  I changed out the stock handlebars and stock seat and replaced them with the SERG hadlebars & seat...couldn't be happier!

Last weekend I took Ken's new 09 SERG on a little test ride.  I am quite impressed with the way it handles in the twisties.  Very smooth.  Nice machine.

The handling of the 09's are hands down far better than prior years.  Hold a turn much better.

Iroar, if you found it more difficult to turn during a short test, I'm betting you were going slow and did not realize how much heavier the 09's are.  The dry weight of my '04 RG was 746 lbs.  The '09 is 783, 820 with fluids!!  Once your at speed, the '09;s fly adn feel far more planted and stable in turns.  Just reading about the improvements lead me to order the SERG...  Love it!  :bananarock:

IROAR, I agree with Greg. The 09's are much heavier than earlier years.

However, Greg is understating the weight of the 09's... at least for the SERG. Take a look at the 2009 FLTRSE3 Spec Sheet[/ur] on Harley's web site.

Here it states the the b]dry[/b]
weight of the SERG is 846.90 lbs!!! In running order, it tips the scales at 880.60 lbs!!! (Ladies and Gents we are now within striking distance of the GoldWing's 900+ lb heft.)

However, the SERG handles incredibly well in tight twisties. I got in almost 100 solid miles of twisty roads on Tuesday -- Cherohala Skyway to Santeelah Rd to Hwy 143 to Hwy 129 (Tail of the Dragon) to Foothills Parkway to 321. My SERG gave me the confidence to corner somewhat agressively after only a few minutes. As I put more curves and miles behind me, my confidence grew and I realized that the SERG is more forgiving than my 05 FLTRI or 07 FLTR.

You've got to ride the 09 Touring bikes for a little while to truly appreciate the changes in the handling.

Just my $0.02 worth...

RickC is right, the SERG is 846.90 lbs.   :2vrolijk_21:  I'm still trying to figure out how the bike got so fat!   :confused5:

Iroar said he tested a RG not a SERG so I gave the HD published weights of the RG.  BTW, the heavier the bike, the more you need to counter steer (push bars to the right to go left & vice versa) .  Most of us do that subconsciously.  I personally love the twisties.  Iroar may need to push the bars a bit harder.  When I do, the SERG dives into turns and holds a very good line.

RickC... we need to ride together some time!

i have an 08 tr too. compared to the 09....sorry there is no comparison, the 09 rocks. :orange:

i did notice one time on the 09 with low air pressure in the rear it didn't want to corner too well. :nixweiss:

I spent 30 years on sport bikes from GSXR"S to Bimota's. The 09's HD chassis is fantastic. The SERG handles even better than I hoped! My God it has scraper pads on the bags! My wife would frown on the characteristics of a Ferrari. I know it would steer too quick and ride rough. A Girl thing no doubt.......

No doubt the 09 SERG is heavy, but once moving you do not notice it.  I feel it is the best handling harley I have ever owned.  Seems stable and planted in the curvers.

Since you've owned 3 other R Gs I've got to respect you thoughts. But, coming off of two EGs I'm totally pleased w/ the SERG set up. Rock solid in the curves. Leans way the heck over w/ no concerns at all. Straight line down the road at all speeds is excellent. A little top heavy but all my baggers have been.
