Group riding tips.........
« on: April 08, 2009, 11:50:35 AM »

At Dave's suggestion.....I'm going to start this thread with the intent of providing tips for group riding:

Begin the ride at the start location with a full tank of gas......when the pack stops for fuel everybody tops off regardless of how large your tank is or how great of mileage you get.

Always pass the hand signals back to the last rider in the group.

The person leading the ride needs to think about the last riders in the pack, when pulling out from a stop....allow everybody a chance to pull out and catch up before accelerating to cruising speed.

The person leading should try to maintain a relatively consistent speed so that the pack doesn't start rubber-banding, allowing other vehicles to merge into the pack.

When scheduling a ride, let it be known if it's the "meeting time" or "kickstand up" time.

Thank you JC for posting the info.  With the Solvang trip & several other trips coming up, the info is/will be very useful. Hopefully the CVO family will take a minute or two, to read & use the tips.

Might also mention that when within a group; stay there.  See too many riders who feel compelled to show their ass somehow by cutting in and out or falling back or forward to talk to someone.  Stay put.  Enjoy the ride.  Leave the "Look at Me, I'm Cool Changing Places" t-shirt at home.  If someone really does need to move to speak to someone then signal intent, go where you need to and stay there.

There's a lot more......we're waiting for your husband to come along and add his .02 worth. :nixweiss:  Others too. :2vrolijk_21:

For those who've never been a road captain, they think that getting on a bike and just riding their own ride is all there is to it.  But when you're leading a pack, especially a large pack, it's a whole different set of responsabilities, challenges and planning that's involved  in order to bring everybody back together.

Here is some stuff we tend to follow as guidelines in our H.O.G. chapter. Works quite well.

Ground Rules
- Everyone rides at their own risk. The group, the road captain, or the organizer will accept no liability.
- Keep looking at your rear view mirror. Others may want to overtake the group and need some space.
- Pending on traffic allow cars or other motorcycles join the group. Don't be a hero and try keep ranks closed. They will leave as soon as they can.

Staging
- The road captain leads the group. The road captain is always right.
- Pending on the size of the group and traffic it may necessary to use road marshals to block traffic at intersections. This is not legal. But helpful to keep the group as one.
- If road marshals are used, it may be helpful to have a leader of the pack. This is the first rider of the actual group.
- Pending on the size of the group a last man is necessary. This rider will attend to anyone having to stop, so that the group can continue to a safe parking area.
- Inexperienced riders should make sure to be at the front of the actual group, just behind the leader of the pack.
- Overtaking only if unavoidable.
- Bikes should stage side by side, but ride staggered. This creates a larger safety distance. Stay on your side of the lane.
- Distance between bikes should not be unnecessary large. Keep your speed, do not fall back and then accelerate.

Ride safely,
Louis

Dave, JC, great idea.

We ought to have a separate board about safety suggestions....  Louis has a good post, above.  Here's an informative article from American Motorcyclist about group riding:   http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/groupRide.asp

SEVENTEEN GROUP SAFETY TIPS:

1) The first thing you want to do is organize the ride. This can be as informal as standing around in a parking lot, or as complicated as a special meeting to hand out maps and cellphone numbers.

2) Remember that riding in a group does not mean you surrender any decision making when it comes to your safety. Ride your own ride, and don't go any faster than you feel comfortable going.

3) When picking your route and the stops you'll make along it, consider the stamina of the group, the experience of all the riders, and the limits of the motorcycles in the group. Remember, these are your friends. If it's going to be a long ride, be sure to have a few break stops along the way.

4) You'll need to communicate while on the ride, so make sure everyone knows the signals you'll use. (Suggested signals:  http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/groupRideSignals.asp )

5) When creating your formation, it's wise to have your experienced riders at the lead and running sweep. Consider positioning the less experienced riders immediately behind the leader. This allows the front rider to adjust the pace if necessary.

6) Ideally, the sweep rider will have a cellphone to call for help if a motorcycle is disabled, or if there has been an accident.

7) If the goal of the ride is to keep the group together, the leader should only go at the pace of the least experienced rider.

8) While riding, don't fixate on the motorcycle in front of you. Instead, remember your basic training. Look well through the turn to where you want to go.

9) If the group is riding faster than you are comfortable with, let the sweep rider know you're dropping out and ride at your own pace. So you may reach your destination a few seconds behind the others, but you will get there, and that's what's important. Keep in mind, it's all about fun.

10) All riders are also responsible for making sure their motorcycles are mechanically up to the task. Before you even meet up with the group, make sure you've got plenty of fuel in the tank, and you've taken care of all those maintenance issues. Not sure what to check? Use T-CLOCS.
( http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/preridechklist.asp ) You really don't want to be the reason for stopping the group for something mechanical you could have prevented.

11) If it's going to be a large group, consider establishing a buddy system among the riders, or divide the group into smaller five- or seven-rider packs. That way, if something goes wrong, you don't have 25 motorcycles sitting on the side of a busy highway. Also, smaller groups can more easily navigate through city streets.

12) On the road, motorcyclists should have at least a 2-second cushion in front and behind them. If you want to keep the group tight, consider a staggered formation. Leave enough room per lane so each rider can maneuver side-to-side if need be. Avoid side-by-side formations as they shrink your space cushion.  (Note that LEO ride side by side or "two up." For experienced riders, this has many advantages).

13) Trikes and sidecars should stay in the center of the lane, and should be given the same amount of cushion as if they were a car.

14) As turns get sharper, or as visibility decreases, move back to a single file formation. You'll also want to use single file when entering or exiting a highway, at toll booths, or when roads have a rough or questionable surface.

15) At intersections where you've come to a stop, tighten the formation to side-by-side to take up less space. As the light turns green, or when traffic opens up, the bike on the left proceeds through first.

16) Remember we share the road with many other vehicles, and it's against the law to block an intersection.

17) When parking, try to get the group off the roadway as quickly as possible. If you can, arrange in advance to have pull-through parking at your destination, or at the very least, make sure there is ample parking for your size group.

No one wants to see a scratched CVO!!  (Let alone one of us.)

How do ya think Wrongway got his name? :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Since this forum is not affiliated nor endorses any group rides and they're strictly a bunch of people deciding to ride together......there's no board.  These are just suggestions and none are absolute.  For instance, some of the HOG rules mentioned above are different from rules of most clubs.

If you're going to have a group ride, especially with a group that hasn't rode together before, you might want to think about a pre-ride meeting to lay down the ground rules for that ride, so that they know what to expect.
