CVO Sidecar and ABS?
« on: April 08, 2009, 10:37:17 PM »

Friend of mine just purchased a  used 2008 SERK and is considering a sidecar.  I did a search here and found liberty sidecars..

Any idea how ABS would work with that???  He is older w/ a bad leg but refuses a trike....  I thought this might be a option.....  He sent a email to liberty but has not heard back yet..  Harley's TLE Side Car says to consult the dealer about ABS... 4 Dealers have no clue....

Dont I always have very weird topics???

Also I will be formally introducing my 08 Aniv SERK w/ all the great mods and advice I got here!

on the sidecar thread there was a guy last year that got a ultra with abs and had a tle mounted to it. the dealer was totaly clueless - you need to find folks that really know how to do it and do it properly.

liberty sidecars look cooler, cost as much. have a rigid mount, but a sprung sidecar wheel, you have to weld a nut onto the frame - ultra wiring in the sidecar wont work - ie no headset, no sound controls, no cb etc

hd sidecars will fit perfect, no welding - the wheel is rigid - all the sidecar controls for sound, cb, xm, etc work just like the riders. my wife has a bad back - cant ride the bike more than 15 mins - but can ride in the hack all day - very cushy ride.

in either case - if the sidecar is going to stay on the bike GET A RAKED SIDECAR/TRIKE tree - otherwise they steer like a buldozer. steering is terribly strong arm if you stick with the stock tree - many folks buy a hd sidecar and take it off the second day because they cant steer it - you NEED the tree - but once the tree is on it cant be riden as a solo bike.. hard choice.

if you go with a sidecar - get all the manuals, do it properly, never have the back seat passenger be larger than the sidecar passenger or you will crash, get toe in right, lean out right. do the tree, once set you can set the cruise on 80 and go.

Hey Tim, do you need to extend the forks if raking the tree out?  :nixweiss: Wouldn't it lower the bike if you keep same length fork tubes?  spyder

the hd trike front end has raked trees and 1" longer tubes

the liberty trees i have come with 1" top nuts to extend the tubes 1" - very high quality parts.

if you dont use longer tubes the front end is lowered a inch

im running a 15" car tire on the rear so i left off the spacers... - speed bumps are a problem so im going to put in the spacers next time i do any front end work and get 13.5" rear shocks.

the 09 bikes tires are more durable so for a 09 id use the stock tires and install trees with the spacers

liberty sidecars have to have the bike running at std ht because there is no provision to adjust the sidecar ht

hd sidecars can be ht adjusted so you can install them on a bike lowered a inch no problem.

both are good

The HD side car is the way to go. It is engineered for the HD motorcycle. Find a dealer that knows what they are doing. If you are having trouble PM Axil on this site. He set mine up years ago and knows his chit. He was a mechanic for Montgomery County Police in Maryland and had to learn them there.
