Foamy Oil
« on: April 18, 2009, 11:22:13 AM »

After the next time you take a ride- pull the dipstick, shine a flashlight into the oil filler cap and see if you notice the oil bubbled/foamed up. It dissapates after a few minutes- but this doens't seem normal. I was checking oil temps with the pyrometer and noticed it was frothy in there. (Oil level is good) Any comments?

I have noticed it also. Not sure if it is normal or not. Hard to say what is or is not normal with these bikes.

with so many problems we have all become 110 paranoid with these motors and check things we wouldnt normally check, just think what your oil has actually been doing inside that motor, its not a James Bond Martini shaken but not stirred.

That's when I dumped the MOCO oil and switched to Mobil One. My CC temp has not exceeded 235 F since changing oil, baffles, drilling cats, installing a SSERT, and getting a dyno tune. The ambient temps here, are currently in the 60s and I have checked, but did not see that foam oil on the dip stick. I may change my story this summer when the temps get into the 90s. However; I hope to have the 255s replaced by then.

Engine got hot yesterday sitting in stop & go traffic and the EITMS kept activating- just wondering if the oil got cooked a little- that why I was shooting the temp gauge in every crevice - ok I am probably  just paranoid-

I installed the 09 stock non cat, headers and the fullsac 2.25" baffles with  no tune yet , only 300 miles on the clock, outside temps in the 80s and the oil temp at the pan at cruise with to up riding average speed 70  temps are in the 260s , will have the mastune here shortly. and if temps do not come down will add another cooler.  syn 3 in the engine and primary , shookproof in the trans. not seeing any foam in oil.  Doc

ragrep, the scavenger side of the oil pump is bigger (wider) than the feed side so it is sucking oil and air to send back to the oil tank. a small layer of foam/bobbles will be present for a few minutes after shut down.     axil

Post 4 is on the right track
Let the exhaust out, a cam change, a good tune up, oil cooler in the wind not below, and off you go. Get the temps down! The thin oil hot holds more air. Cool it down and the temp, noise and foam go bye bye. In the hotest weather it is not unreasonable to use a straight 50w dino or syn.

Trying to learn something here...
So the suction side of the oil pump is able to pull oil and air without affecting the discharge flow or pressure. Seems that the pump would "gas off" or for lack of a better explanation loose suction and cavitate..  Further; I would think that an air mix would create a false high oil level.

Guess I just don't see what's going on internally, I'm not a mechanic  :nixweiss:

I rode mine most of the day and checked the crankcase oil (many times) and just didn't see this foaming business as I did when the bike was stock (CC temps 260-270). Today, no foaming, didn't matter if the engine was running or not...  Ambient temp was 65 and the crankcase temp didn't get above 230.

I'm confused bout this issue. Geezzz, I've got a lot of respect for you guys. Are you sure this oil foam is normal ?
