Replacing that tach!
« on: October 23, 2005, 02:45:12 PM »

So, I picked up a new tach for the bike. It's slightly different in its lead colors and I'm starting to think I might have the wrong piece.

Of course everything else looks the same.

I took the rubber shielding off the original setup to look at how the leads are connected, and am now in a funk trying to figure out how to install this thing.

The original setup is married to the speedo leads and all plug in to the single 4-contact wiring plug.
The original contact wire colors on the unit are blue, orange and yellow.

The blue wire appears to be spliced with two blue wires from the speedometer.

The yellow wire runs directly to the plug.

The orange wire appears to be spliced with 3 orange wires from the speedometer.

Here's the real question:

As I look at the replacement unit, the colors are pink, orange, and black.

Are those fittings down by the housing detachable? And is that how I'm supposed to replace the unit?

Or, do I have to splice everything to the speedometer?

AND..if I do get to just detach and re-plug into the fitting down by the tach housing...which colors replace which?

Thanks for any help.

I didn't get paperwork for the tach. Bought it off e-bay from HD shop in Nashville.

The manual's useless. It gives instructions on removing the tach...and then says "attach the three leads" and then "reinstall".

Doesn't say if it needs to be wired to the Speedo...and the diagram is line-drawn with no color table.

I'm more curious if the clips near the unit themselves detach and can be connected, or if I have to re-wire.

It looks like they're plug-ins, I'm going to try to take better pictures.

Neander, go to the dealer and have them print up an install sheet for you. They have online access to install sheets. It will most likely tell you the info you are looking for.

Good Luck

found this on a google search

Quote
On my bike, the pink wire is the trigger wire from the coil to the tach, the orange wire is +12v, and a black wire goes to ground - for the tach, that is

having a schematic of the FXR would help match that up

Well...

Upon further review, I may not have to replace the tach at all.

I was running the bike, and noticed some hesitation under load. (insert "you're too fat for the bike joke here")..pulled the plugs...they're burnt fine, so tonight I'm going to trace down to the coil and see if everything's tight there.

If not...we're good i know what's up...if so...it's "replace the coil" time. Which is easier than all the electrical work..

It is possible that the coil is either going, or I have a loose connection.

I'm barely 600 miles from 10K on the clock anyway.

your tach get its signal from the coil, could be where your loose connection is
