Best bolt in cam for CVO touring models?
« on: April 21, 2009, 06:39:48 PM »

I want to swap out the stock cam- with a bolt in cam- dont want to do any head work, change pistons- ect.

I called Andrews and they told me for a bolt in cam the 54h was the best choice- however I havent seen much praise for it here on the threads.

I want to stay at or under .575 lift- looking to increase the torque between 2200-4500 range- not looking for any significant HP increases-

Alternates
Andrews 32H-
SE260
HQ-39
TW-7

Suggestions?

The Andrews works well, the SE cam would not be on my list however the SE251 may be if the load isn't too heavy. The TW7 I have sold and the owners are vey happy. Last one went 118 peak torque with headwork. The HQ grind I would target would be the HQ575 not the 0039, should work ok but have no personal experience just looking at the numbers.

I went with the 54H, it is supposed to be a low rpm torque monster (starts at 2200)not much over 5500

I will see once the build gets done!

Hard pressed for a "best". There are many good choices and it depends on the load, riding style, type of use, and tolerance for valvetrain noise.
Numbers on a dyno sheet are just data but on the road the most fun to ride will come from modest compression, and highest torque in the riding curve area 2-4000 rpm, the quantitative total not peak.

Dewey-

Thanks- Im interested in the dyno sheets for general visual reference to compare different cam profiles- to see where the cam comes on and off the power curve. I get that there a lot of variables impacting the performance - rider- load- tuner(-the person tuning the engine) environmental ect.

I am pretty happy with the 255 it pulls well from 2000rpm, but it starts to fall off a little too too early at 3500/3600rpm - and I want to extend the plateau further right about another 1000 rpm.

I am here to tell you I talk to so many guys every day that got a lot more (or less depending on your perspective) than they bargain for. Chasing dyno numbers is costly and the end result is often times a bike that is not real fun to ride. We don't ride much over 4K and don't ride dynos we are on the road and long cams, overkill heads, and larger TBs will get you bigger hp numbers. Many mistake HP for torque that they want. A heavy bike and load (2up) will get lots of smiles with the most gross torque where we typically ride from 2-4K rpm. When the build is done right the HP will be there too and ride shotgun.
Number 1 mistake is to overcam the bike in search of HP numbers. The SE255 is a mistake IMO in the other direction and much of the motors heat and reliability issues can go away with just a cam change to a mild grind

Here is a dyno of a 10/1 103" with Woods TW5 with +2 advance as an example. This bike is huge fun.

Were the cams different in 07 110's..

Here a sheet from mine...it ran good...no cams pipe n tune I do not know if it was real on paper but it pulled good and ran cool...Please flame away... :D

Why flame?
It runs good has a good tune and it is fine.
That is a typical 110 dyno with a good pipe and tune.
Many want more on top and still want the low to mid torque as well.
The woods tw7 cam swap is case and point.

Hey Dewey-

I agree about usable performance- 2000-4000rpm- there is no point to wind the stock motors up beyond 3500 to 4000rpm since it stopd building usable power beyond 4000rpm. For me, the fun factor is in stong pulling power 2500 to 4000-4500

Im not looking for bigger hp numbers- just more useable torque and more torque range- maybe a little cooler running engine-

I understand that a lot of folks get fixated on solely on HP numbers-go to changing TB's for more air and select cams based on Lift, but I am learning that more air often means less torque, and Hi-Lift is not always the benchmark to selecting a good performing cam.  I am trying to study more  about- timing- duration and overlap-not to mention- head flow and porting. Its a challenging process- since its hard to find folks with real knowledge vs- "hear-and- say"

Can you comment on the Andrews 54h- they(andrews) recommend that this is their best bolt in cam for the 110 to improve where the 255 lacks-
