Oil temp gauge
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:50:35 PM »

I am thinking about getting an oil temp gauge for my 09 Fat Bob CVO. What are my options?

Some thing like this?

Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD Readout - Chrome

New and improved "capacitive" level sensing technology provides the highest degree of accuracy and durability. Now available in chrome and black, these dipsticks allow you to check your oil level and oil temperature with the push of a button. Add function and style by replacing your stock dipstick with this hard working version. No more grabbing a rag to pull your hot dipstick. No more oil drips on your pipes and on the garage floor. Simply push the button and this dipstick lights up with a brilliant backlight. Oil level is indicated by a four-segment readout - it even reminds you to check your oil when it is hot. Designed to be waterproof, the LCD display operates on a longlasting, replaceable Lithium coin-type battery (CR2032 3V, P/N 66373-06). Display features a low battery indicator, and press-and-hold feature to toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

 62974-09    Fits '06-later Dyna® models.

 US $139.95.

Looks good. How long have you been running it? It would certainly save me from running wires and cluttering up my bars. Were do I find one?

That info is from the HD web site.  I've had a similar one one the SERG since October and it seems to work very well.  You can get it at any HD dealership.  I tend to order my acc's online as there are many dealers now who give 20% off.  I've used Chicago HD  on line and been very satisfied.

I had on for two years on my 07.  Definitely worth it.  Have one on order for my new 09 with the latest design.

One other option is to replace the air temp gage with the HD oil temp gage.  A couple of guys I ride with have done this.  The part is on HD web and dealer installed it few 2 hours of labor.  It works well as you can see you oil temp while you ride.

I ride in South Texas and have never felt the need to look at the oil temp while I'm riding.

The 09 SE oil temp gauge has differant back lighting than the 08 s and earlyer, the 09s the numerals light up and the one they sell just light up the back light. Same in the daytime but odd at night.  Doc

I thought the gauge was the answer for me, until last Monday when I noticed the unit was not reading the oil level correctly. The culprit was that the gauge had split apart lengthways leaving a 5 " plus piece of hard plastic swimming around the oil pan. I lost two days of riding time and the service manager strongly recommended that I just get my money back and stay away from the gauges as they have had this happen before. He also told me of numerous failures from the older units that caused it's share of customers that over reacted due to some crazy readings on the temperature. If you get the LCD I hope you have better luck that I did, I did like the ability to check the temperature of the motor as we all seemed to be concerned with the excessive heat.

Good Luck

What the heck, I don't have anything pressing to do so I'll throw in my 2 cents on the subject.  Be advised that you should take this with a grain of salt, as momma claims I'm a little more full of crap today than normal.

If you have a choice, go with a real constant reading gauge as opposed to a dipstick where you have to stop and bend over to press a button to get a reading.  Too many of those dipsticks, of the various designs over the years, have had problems.  The latest ones that also read the oil level sounded like a great idea at first, but I've heard several complaints about those as well.

Now, as to the need for any kind of gauge, I don't think a real need exists.  First, how many of you really know what the safe limit is for the oil you are running?  Second, what do you plan to do if the reading seems too high, shut her down and walk home?  Why drive yourself crazy adding another gauge that will cause you to obsess and worry about another thing on your Harley that you really can't do much about anyway?  Just ride the bike, and if it gets too hot you'll know about it when the temp management system kicks in.

Jerry, your logic always helps to return my 'worry wart' side to the center of an issue, but I would really appreciate being able to check the oil level w/o having to deal with the hot dipstick & drips.  Is that worth the new dual readout dipstick?  :nixweiss: spyder

Jerry made some great points.
Unless you really want to know what your oil temp is, don't install a gauge. Harleys are air and oil cooled. In warm weather, they run warm. Do you really want to know about something you can do nothing about about? Kinda like having a Gay relative. Things have been going on for years, finding out now after all those handshakes just makes you feel queezy.  I've had an oil temp gauge for over 20,000 miles combined on my last two Baggers, I have developed a rule of thumb. After 1 hour of sustained 75 mph, air temp + 200 deg = oil temp. Last week I made the one hour trip to Kingman at 75 MPH during 85 deg weather. Oil temp was right at 290 when I exited the freeway. Bike was running fine, everything normal. A few people have questioned the accuracy of my guage. With the sender in boiling water it reads 212 deg. Some things your just better off not knowing. Lol....

I know that all you hear about are the bad ones, but mine starting acting strange, inconsistent oil levels.  I've personally seen them fall apart on the road.  Not worth it unless installed at time of purchase and covered under warranty.
