Cam advice please
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:31:18 PM »

  Hi All,
I hope everyone is doing well. I have been doing a lot of planning with the bike. I decided i am not ready to do a entire build on the engine yet. I don't have enough knowledge and don't have a good builder to count on yet. So i am going to hold it of till next year foresure. I had the dealer put Vance and Hines 2 into 1, and put a canned map on it with a sert.  I am going to put a new cam in it, i am going to bring it to the dealer just for this because i haven't found a good mechanic in the area yet. My goal for now is maybe to get a little more out of the engine and cool it down a bit. But ultimately i want the engine to run as efficient as it can until i have a plan on the build. I think i am going to stay with a chain driven cam. It is my understanding that this is the easiest swap. Just what i have picked up, is that at all accurate? If i am correct, i have also gathered that without any headwork or digging into the engine any further the se251 is my best option in the chain driven cam? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of learning the engine stuff here. If i am wrong please correct me, and if i am off the map please get me on track. I am trying to get my hands on a 88 or 96 engine that i can rip down and build just for the experience. If anyone has a good resource i can read or watch building/understanding these engines i would like to know. I did order the service manual for the springer,Still waiting for it to arrive. Thanks for any help in advance.

Without doing a lot of Mods. I think that you have the best cam in now. Having the heads ported and polished would help you the most. Then going with either a SE Race Tuner or a Power Commander. You will need either one for future Mods. The hotest thing going, staying with SE is the 260 Cam. However you will need High Compression Pistons and all the above done. But if you decide to change cams I would be intrested in buying your 255 cams from you. I hope this is useful.......Jeff

You would be surprised how well a 204 works in a stock motor replacing the SE255 for just the reasons you mentioned. Others that are popular are the Andrews 32h and Woods TW7. The larger SE cams would move the torque band to the right and require a lot of downshifting, plus need head work, compression added and a larger TB to realize the potential. Then you have a weak crank and main bearing system to be nervous about.
KISS principle will get you where you want to be.

If this cam set is anything like the Wood's cams I have, then it would be my pick.  The TW6G definitely woke up my Road King........and it was mighty lively to begin with.......for a stock TC88.  Bob knows cams!   :2vrolijk_21:

But he has an 09 CVO FXSTSSE. He will want to stay with SE for Warranty Purposes. Its not a stock 96. Its a 110 Engine.

The use of the SE products does not retain the warranty. Technically any change to the engine voids the warranty. Its the dealers discretion and weather or not they are mod friendly.

I put in the Redshift 575 cams and am still breaking in so haven't really hit it yet. So far i like the torque range. Also put in Zippers Tmax and it is working flawlessly. Considering a bigger throttle body

Got it.  That's why I highlighted "TW7" earlier, which is designed as a "Bolt-in" for the 110cid and any SE performance heads (.575 lift).  Simply stated that if the TW7(H) is anything like my TW6G and TW408G, then it would be my pick.   :2vrolijk_21:

I think the "warranty" discussion has been properly addressed.   ;)

Pretty sure you're good to go to twist the throttle as far as you like.  Just had my FLHR cammed up (Wood TW6G), SE billet plate, S&S gears, SE adjustable pushrods, OEM lifters, high flow oil pump, Jet Hot coated duals.  Asked my builder about limitations.  He told me since no head or jug/slug work was done......Give her all she's got, Captain!

I did.  Blew the dipstick out the oil pan......so it is now secured with a clamp.  FUN!

Ummmmh,  If you have observed my other post regarding my 110 build and dyno results, etc.  you might note that I'm about to sell boxes full of 110 parts that would include 255 cams as I believe (they are the stock cams for the SE 110) :pepper:

From what I have read and a Harley Tech told me was that the....SE 253 were in 07 and 08 SE 110. In 09 they started with the SE 255. Is this correct or not?

He is not correct. I took a 255 out of my 08 SERK and sold it on eBay. They are listed in the specs for the 110's.
