2010 Tour Glide FLTGSE
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:28:06 AM »

After getting confirmation last week that '09 will be the last year of the Road Glide as we know it, talk at CHL this weekend was about a replacement. The '01 FLTRSEI2 added some much needed parts that the '00 lacked. After seeing and riding the the FLTRSE3, I noticed the much needed equipment was again lacking. In particular, lowers, Tour Pak, intercom, CB, XM, and a comfortable seat. I rode a stock FLTR and was less than impressed. I quickly noticed the wider stance of the '09 frame but that was about all that impressed me. The SE version was top notch!
The SEUC4 is arguably the most profitable bike in the MoCo's stable. This top of the line bike quickly sells at most dealers, usually for a premium. It would make sense for them to add a few bells and whistles to a bike that is already in the lineup and be able to charge a premium price. Couple all of this with a water cooled engine and you have the 2010 Screamin Eagle Tour Glide.

Well the general conscience among the beer swilling folk (myself excluded) was that if the rumor was true and the 110" will also not return in '10, then something has to replace it. General thought would indicate that if '09 sees the death of the 110", then the farthest out the MoCo will have to warranty that motor would be 2016. That means that new CARB regulations would dictate a (new?) liquid cooled version. Major effects will go into place for the MY 2010 regarding EPA standards. The current powers to be want a 'Green' society and that means no more oil and gas guzzling engines that spew toxic fumes into the environment... or so I've been told. One thing that is very evident at the MoCo as of late, they are willing to change quickly to the market needs and trends. Look at the Rocker that was only in existence for two model years! They thought a redesigned Deuce would spur a younger crowd and it didn't sell. Although capturing the entry level cyclist is important for future sales, it's the high end (read that: high profit) bikes that sell and pay the bills. The '10 SETG will earn exclusivity which will equate to profit. When the MoCO sells a bike, they are selling more than just a machine. They are selling emotion and mystic. Hence the T shirt's that read "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand". HD's marketing is nothing less than stupendous.

IF water cooled it would either be the V-Rod motor, or an entirely new design.  I can't see the V-Rod motor pulling a fully loaded Ultra with trailer, or Trike no less.  I think they're stickin' with air cooled but probably wrong some day.  Wishful thinking maybe.

Ducati went wet and no one objected. In fact they took over road racing, dominating today with water cooling. I still like the simplicity of air cooled thou. I guess plumbing will happen sooner or later. :drink:

I am sure there are many like me who do not want intercom, xm, CB and so on.  I would never consider an Ultra Classic.  I would have to take way to much off the bike.

If you ask me, the 09 SERG is the perfect bike.  I have yet to have some on passanger on the bike, and ods are I never will unless a short hop around town.  While I did get a chopped tour pac, it is only on the bike for long trips, and solo position.

I sure will not argue about a seat though.  Stock one is ok, one of the better Harley stock seats but not distance seat for sure.

Dave, didn't mean to be confrontational just wanted to point out that there are ways for Harley to make more money. And that's the business they're in. A Tour Glide would allow them a larger profit margin.

With HD's acquisition of MV Agusta  sooner or later there will be a cross over of ideas.

My source has changed his message.

I was told originally there would be a SERG for 2010.

But that has changed, no standard Road Glide for 2010 and now, no SERG.

So if you have an 09 it's a one year special, take care of it, it may some day be worth 75K like my 01 SERG.

If you wait long enough!

Good luck.

For sure , if there is no SERG in 2010 , then our 09s are definitely keepers .

Nobody knows for sure what is in store.  And they all signed NDS (non-disclosures) so nothing is going to leak out of Harley until dealers week.
We do know Harley has to produce more water cooled models to keep the air cooled ones.  The EPA average needs to be brought down otherwise the air cooled legacy is history.
Someone stated that the V-Rod motor would not work in a Ultra.  All the numbers I've seen from that motor would make most people happy campers.  More HP and torque than alot of stage 2 motors.
It is sad that the Road Glide is going away.  It was HD's best kept secret for handling.  It was also the bastard child.

So the good part is we only have to wait about 60 more days.

I was just pointing out there are also many that do not want Everything.

Just think of all the lost sales Harley would have if the Only choice in the Electra glide was the Ultra, no standard, no Classic and no Street Glide, the best selling touring bike.

If they were to Say only offer the Tour Glide loaded like an Ultra they could loose lots of sales.

I agree they are only in business to make money.  But how many would buy and Ultra, and strip it to turn it in to a street Glide the number one selling touring bike?

My Opinion is Harly has missed the boat by only offering the Road Glide one way, not two or three ways like the Do the Electra Glide

FLSTFI Dave, I'm with you.  The SERG is better because of the simplicity (sure, it has cruise and stereo and batwing) and that's what I love.  I don't want intercom or CB or A/C or even water-cooled.  Yeah it gets hot in the summer, but that's part of what I love - exposure to the elements.  Besides, in the winter, that heat is enjoyable.  I'm sure MoCo will be forced by market and govt demands to make changes but I hope the air-cooled stays.  Less components means more bike to me.  If I want a radiator, I'll ride in the cage.

Rumor has it that the standard FLHT is one of the bikes that will be discontinued for 2010.
