Horn Relocation...UPDATE....Picture
« on: November 09, 2005, 11:15:37 AM »

Looking for a good place to relocate my horn.

I need the space for a cool little mod I saw. Actually I've already done the mod, now I need to find a home for the horn...

Options seem to be...

Under the seat in the frame just in front of the battery. Maybe in the fairing somewhere...

Thoughts...suggestions..??

Between the front frame members, below the engine guard?

Inside the fairing.  That's where H-D mounts the second horn if you buy the dual-horn accessory.

Laker - I knew someone would get me on that... ;D

I'll take pics tonight if I can get home before dark and post them...

Anyway...the dual horn option has a mount spot in the fairing..??? That may be my answer...of course that'll mean I have to take that bugger apart...ugh..

I was thinking I'd get a nice chrome mini-horn..maybe 2 or 3 inches in diameter, drilling a hole through the crash bar, just under the frame neck and attaching the small "beautiful" chrome horn there..

Or on the frame crossover below the carshbar kinda like GRC states...

I read something on another site when I was researching adding better horns where a guy actually mounted two horns under the bike, between the trans & starter and the rear wheel.  As long as you seal the connections and point the open end away from road splash, that just might work. ????  It would be out of sight and probably louder than mounting in the fairing.

I guess I'll have to take the tank off to get to the wiring. For the mod I moved the wires outta' my way and tucked them onto the upper motor mount.

That space between the battery and motor in the frame...it's a big empty area with a couple of cables used as what looks like grounding wiring. There's just enough room in there to stuff a smallish horn...hmm..

ughh...too dark to get a good pic, plus my camera software CD is MIA....I had to rebuild the system and I hadn't loaded the Fuji software yet...

I'll have to get the pics Friday when I'm off for the day. Plus I found where I'll put the horn. The Harley Sporty horn in black has a 3 inch bracket....I'll mount that on the crash bar tab at the frame neck. I just got in from the dealer and it fits perfect...at least on the FLHTC in the showroom...

Don - Here's what I did, but the pics will tell the whole story...

Removed all the horn hardware, cover, horn, and mounting bracket. What was left was a mounting grommet of course attached to the motor mount. The grommet looks more like a bushing though. It is a thick rubber washer compressed by a brass washer with a 5/16's(or so) bolt going through it. When attached to the motor mount hanger it provides a rubber mount for the horn bracket so it dosen't rattle. Anyway, I dremeled the bolt off to create a flat surface on the grommet. I think it was about a 2inch diameter. From there I took a 103 medallion, which is a highly chrome polished "disc" which inserts into the Paul Yafey(sp) air cleaner cover. I mixed JB Weld (Industrial Strentgh) and let it fire off about 15 minutes. From there I applied the JB Weld to the newly created flat brass washer then mounted the Medallion on it. I held it on with gentle pressure applied via small clamps...

Next morning....WOW....hard as, uh well,,,JB Weld....

I tried to get home this aternoon to take pics but ran out of time and then realized no software...

Stay tuned...

Stay tuned????  I'm not gonna get a good night's sleep now, waiting to see what this mod is.  Why do you do this to us Phattey?  It's not a good trait, you know....teasing small children, pets, [smiley=dier_21.gif] and CVOers.  Har!  spyder

Spyder, I think Ron's whole story about the camera software was just bubkus.  He's just messing with us.  Cruelty, that's what it is.  He could show us but he knows it's gonna look cool and just wants to make us suffer.  That does it, I'm havin' a beer....

what's gonna look cool?  What kinda 'mod' is he working on/fabricating?  It's a good thing I don't live closer, or I'd fire up a scooter and ride down on 'em and find out.  What's your guess as to what it is?   [smiley=confused5.gif]   spyder
