I bought a 15" MacBook Pro late last year.  Upgraded the memory to 4 GB.  Installed MSOffice for Mac, CAD, and a few other tools I need.  I still wonder why I did not make the switch sooner.  Unfortunately, work force feeds a PC, but having Office for Mac at home makes it tolerable.

Recently bought new MacBooks for Renea and Stef as well as an AirPort Extreme wireless router.  Finally.......we have a network printer that works 100% of the time.  They love their Macs as well.

I like to tinker with Linux, so have a cobbled together old Windows box I built during my last stint in "The Land of the Morning Calm."  Installed OpenSUSE some time ago.  Use it mainly to learn Linux.  My brother got me into it, and I've been an avid researcher since.  Still have alot to learn to come to to speed with my brother tho'.

The only Windows machine left in the house is in the garage.  It is loaded with Power Commander, Garmin, and Daytona Twin Tech software.  Found a Mac version of the Garmin software, but it isn't as feature rich as the Windows version.  Hopefully......one day.....all three will catch up and offer Mac versions of their S/W, and the last Windows box will fall by the wayside.

Just bought a MACBOOK Pro installed VM ware fusion and also installed windows runs at the same time so I can run all my work programs and loaded all my windows software on it not a hickup so far although it takes some getting used to for some of the more advanced stuff but you can be up and running with it and do all the basic stuff right away. Can't say I would jump up and down and say I love it yet as I am still getting used to it. Does everything I need it to do, doesn't crash, fairly fast and has a beautiful screen which is color matched which helps when using my photoshop.

Okay
I have had the MacBook for a couple of weeks now and I do like it.
I was wondering if someone can explain in very simple terms to me a guy who is very simple minded when it comes to computers.

I only have one work program that is windows based, I would like to run it on my laptop but I get conflicting info.  If I do run it now I open my Mac to all the windows problems...viruses, hackers, etc.    Is this true?

Should I just do without so I can enjoy the benefits of Mac?  Or can I have my cake and eat it too?
Thanks

This comes off of Apples website:

Can a Mac run Windows and Microsoft Office?

Yes. Microsoft Office is available for the Mac, and Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files created on a Mac are fully compatible with Windows. Most other popular applications are available for the Mac, too. But if you need to use a particular Windows-only application, you have a few options: Boot Camp comes with every new Mac, and it lets you run Windows natively — as if your Mac were a PC. If you want to run Mac OS X and Windows side by side, you can purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion. Install one of these applications, along with the Windows Installation CDs, and you can run the occasional Windows program right next to your Mac applications, without having to restart.

If you are going to run the systems parallel meaning windows is installed as another operating system, then I would assume that you would still be able to get viruses.  If it were me, I would leave well enough alone and just enjoy the Mac.  I got mine last year and haven't looked back since.  Of course this is just my .02.

No. You run windows in bootcamp or in a VM like Parallels. You can get a virus in that windows partition or VM, but it wont effect the rest of your Mac.

I just installed my Norton anti virus in the windows partition like normal, no sweat. Too many people send me attachments with windows based programs that I can't open in the mac so now with the windows installed I have the best of both worlds besides the windows seems to run better on the mac.

Looking for some advice with my mac.
I have videos in avi format in iphoto and would like to drag into imovie.  imovie will not take it in avi format.
What is the best way to convert video from avi to mov or some format imovie will accept?

Thanks

Interesting read.

I have been debating weather to get another PC laptop or a Mac Book Pro.  At work I am stuck with Windows as PLC soft ware programs, and such will not run on Mac.

For most of what I do at home I see it will run on Mac with the exception of my TTS software.

I keep leaning more and more to the Mac

A google search got the following - avi to imovie converter. The first link is from a Mac forum.

Thanks Fired00d

Do you have any experience with this on the Mac?
I am a total rookie at the Mac.  The irony is I have some movies in avi format that I somehow converted to mov format and can now edit in imovie.
The insane part is I don't remember or know how I did it.

I keep hoping someone will say just use this "xxxxxxx" and it will work good last a long time.

Thanks

Guppytrash, the best place for advice is in the Apple Support Discussion Groups.  If you cannot find your answer by searching, then post your question and you will get assistance from people who use iPhoto and iMovie all the time.  Here is a link.  Register and enjoy.

CVORick

Thanks I think I figured it out that something went wrong when I loaded the pictures and video from the camera.  I am going to delete all and start over.
Spent a couple of hours with some very helpful people from apple...nobody could solve the problem.
I had given up when I tried opening some of the still shots and realized they were messed up.

Thanks to all of you for your help

I've had a Macbook 13' laptop for about 5 months now. I retained my desktop PC.
It wasn't as easy a transition as I expected after years and years on a PC. Once and awhile I fire up the PC. I just can't believe all the 'buggy' crap I'd put up with MS programs over the years. Just everyday stuff that you just take for granted running a PC. No kidding. Stuff that only becomes apparent when you run a Mac for awhile then go back to using a PC again. Once you get a Mac you'll never go back. If I ever get another desktop computer it will be a Mac, but it's becoming likely a laptop is all I'll ever want or need. I went with the 13" so it'll fit in one of my saddlebags.
My Mac doesn't so much as burp or hiccup ever. I've swapped all my ITunes stuff over to my Mac, and I'm seriously considering getting an IPhone 3Gs.
They just work.
