HWY 1 in California
« on: June 02, 2009, 07:05:59 PM »

Intend on making a trip from Williston ND to Denver Co then over to San Diego. Then travel up the coast on HWY 1 and HWY 101 all the way to Washington. Anybody have any thoughts on HWY 1 and HWY 101?

Six buddies and I are planning on riding from just north of LA all the way to Seattle on Pac 1.   One has ridden (albeit thirty years ago on  Jap bike).  Suppose to be the best ride he's ever been on.

The surveys generally consider it the best ride for two up.

Hwy 1 is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!  Ask Jock about the small piece that he rode.  Amazing views, but it is a SLOW ride compared to the freeways.  I'd do 101 north to San Luis Obispo then Hwy 1 to San Francisco.  You can either stay on Hwy 1 north or cut over to 101 north of the Golden Gate.  I would take 101 to Cloverdale, then 128 back over to Hwy 1.  It'll take a while, but it is a gorgeous ride!  Hell, you will most likely have us left coast riders escorting you!

When you get to San Francisco give me call, I can run you up Hwy 1 apiece. I bet I could get a few more to go too :2vrolijk_21:

When is this happening?  It's a great ride but certain time of the year you have the early morning fog till about noon.

Never been north of Hearst Castle on 1, then Van and Marty found out this weekend and want to take me up. You know I'm up for it.

erniezap is correct.  Take the 101 up to San Luis Obispo and then head north for a few miles and get onto 1.  You can expect fog most of the summer.

So when is the best time to ride it??

We were thinking about late May through early June.

It doesn't matter, you take your chances. It was clear, warm and beautiful on the way home from our last trip a month ago. Big Sur is a good place to stay with great food. lodging and a gas station. If you go further south Ragged Point is great place to check out or stay, and then Cambria. After that it gets a bit more urban.

We rode up the coast from Ca to Port townsend Wa last Sept.  It's a beautifull ride that will take you 3-4 days without sightseeing. It can be quite "misty" so bring a windbreaker at minimum. Definatly worth doing! Roger
