HUBBARD-

I'm thinking of going with the same ratio 3:37 with the HD 6spd. It'll be going into my 113" set-up when finished. My question to you is; What RPM's do you run at 80 to 90mph? How about 60 mph in 5th? I just don't wanna be all revved up when I'm running down the concrete river. If you can give me a ball park figure I'd appriciate it.

Thanks,

Grover

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Grover,
80 MPH is 3200 RPM's in 6th.  90 MPH is right at 4000, I think.  60 MPH in 5th is 2600 RPM's.  If I'm incorrect, I'm sure one of the "Professionals" here, will correct me.  BTW, they may correct me, but they won't outrun me!  ;) [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] As I've stated before, I'm now lookin' for 7th, just like I was lookin' for 6th with the 5 speed!  I always tell myself to remember the RPM's @ certain speeds, but I never do.  At any rate, you'll like that set-up with a 6-speed.  2001 SERG's had that gearing at birth.  That, coupled with the fixed fairing, really gave that Bike the edge, in acceleration and aerodynamics.  Later--HUBBARD

Grover,

I do not have the 3:37 gearing.   I have 21 tooth counter sprocket, 36 tooth basket on the belt side I am running a 32 front pully and a 70 tooth rear.

I believe this is 348 gearing maybe 346 didnt go back an rerun the numbers.

I am using the Baker R2  tall first and 2nd gear with a .080 6th gear.   Equates out to

2400 in 6th = 70
2900 in 6th = 80
about 3400 = 90

Hey Unbalanced-
I'm definately making a gearing change when I go with the 6spd.
With the lower gearing, do you have a problem hooking up on hard acceleration? I'd break loose with my 103 @117/114 in the lower gears. But could always manipulate the clutch n throttle for good tractability.  My concern is w/ much more hp/tq is the lower gearing gonna gett'er done more so than the stock gearing set-up? Remember, I'm going w/ the HD6spd not the Baker. Can I still change out the 1st n 2nd gear with the HD6 versus the Baker6? Or am I stuck with the gear ratios that HD has in theirs? Just questions before I purchase.

Grover

Grover,

I do not know if you can swap out the gears, that is a question for Harley.   I am not sure whose gears they are using.   I would imagine you could always use an Andrews gear set provided they make a sprocket that would intermix with the Jims 6 speed.   I would also expect Jim's to have other gearing choices like baker does.  I have no problem hooking up with the 124 at any time even out of the hole at 3500 rpm ... i may just leave a tiny bit of rubber where i started from :)

GREAT! My darlin' goes in for breast augmentation tonight (6-speed upgrade) and now after reading what everyone's been writing, I am totally confused. The dealer never asked me ANYTHING like what you guys are talking about. I currently get 37.5 mpg @ 85 mph in cruise mode. If I get to stompin on her, my mileage drops significantly more (of course). I want the 6-sopeed strictly for cruising those long distance miles. I always cruise at 85, (3250 rpm) as this is one of my many "sweet spots". When I rode to Chicago from San Jose, it sat @ 85 all day w/o missing a beat, so I am just looking for that top end drop in rpm's. Anything I need to tal;k about with the dealer tonight B 4 I leave her there?
Help please, or just calm me down....

Nasty,

These guys are trying to fulfill 2 needs low end torque by changing to the 21 tooth gets you out of the hole.   If you do not have the 21 tooth you really shouldnt look at the Baker R2 6 speed due to the high first and 2nd gear a 103 motor per Baker isnt really enough power to drive that gearing.  They recommend a 113 or larger before going to the R2 without the 21 tooth counter sprocket.  If your just looking to go to the 6 speed for high end cruise see the last paragraph for an idea you may find really enticing as a good mix.

If your just looking to grab the an extra gear so your not running 3500 to 4000 RPM's to run 85 down the highway the stock 6 speed will work good for you.   If your buying the 6 speed to get better gas mileage its really not going to help there :)

Now you may consider this going to the 24 tooth front counter sprocket with the 37 tooth clutch basket and S&S Speedo Calibration conversion and your 6 speed this would give you more of the best for all around.   Some more low end torque, Reduce your motor RPM's and give you the ability to cruise at 85 with lower RPM's.

Hope that helps some to clarify it :)

Unbalanced, I've always heard that with the 24/37 conversion, the speedo did not need to be recalibrated. I'm about to do mine, so i'm curious.   [smiley=confused5.gif]

Sorry I was talking as if you were going to change gears in the tranny as well.  If your not changing any of the gearing in the tranny you wont.

Thanks Hubbbard [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] and Unbalanced [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]!!

I really appreciate the the friendly info. I'm going with your recomendations, (24/37 gearing and a 6spd)!! You both could have saved me alot of cash by just telling me to keep the stock gearing and 5spd.

So to show you my appreciation, I'd like your addresses so I can send you a thank you card; With half the bill in each!! [smiley=7.gif] [smiley=laugh4.gif]

Thanks again, [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

Grover [smiley=smoking.gif]

ps. Stock is boring...Let's Rock...Can't wait to try the new set-up.

Grover,

That is so nice of you to buy both me and the Hubbard both new gearing setups for Christmas.   Since it is a gift I have to respectfully request that you keep my half of the bill as the gearing will be thanks enough when should I expect to receive my new gearing :)  Besides greed at this time of year is in bad form :).

Hope you enjoy the ride and let us know what ya think :)
