Dunno.... is everyone happy with their 2006 paint??  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I doubt it and I can't say as I blame anyone for being upset, but at some point you either fish or cut bait.

Bagger...

What a beauty! :2vrolijk_21: All the colors are awesome but I do believe the melon is the most eye catching. After having gone through many parts, all I'm waiting on now is the gas tank. How did your tank turn out? Can you get a good photo of it?

I think my tank turned out pretty good.  Do I think it could be better.......you bet I do.  I will tell you this.........it is far and away MUCH better than old tank.  The old tank was almost light brown, and it didn't have much green flake at all, and you couldn't feel the stripes.  This one is dark, there is plenty of flake, and you can feel the stripes just like all my other striped parts.  I can try to get a good picture of it.  I wish I could capture the green flake.

The last tank that came in -  a bunch of the dealer employees were outside in the sunshine looking at it so they could understand what the problem was. It was kind of funny, they were saying things like - "Hmmm, these tanks look kind of brown." What I've been saying for the past year.  :duhk:

Well, depending on one's viewing angle, light and other factors, my entire scoot, not just the tank, looks black.....as shown in the pictures......DARK brown, and in some cases it tries to be purple.  I'm lovin' it.  In my mind, the tank is just a very, very, very, very, ever so slight, itty bitty, teeny weeny, just a smidgen lighter than the other parts..........but it looks great.  When I mention my paint could have been better, that is what I mean.  No one else can see it........but I can, and I can live with that.

Dear Everyone:
I want to thank the members of this website for posting the paint problems with '06 FLHTCUSE'S, notably the black crimson/charcoal slate scheme (which are the colors of my bike).
After reviewing members' threads regarding this problem (and after a thorough inspection of my own paint), I decided to put in a claim with my dealer. It took about six weeks before the MoCo responded to the dealer (I do believe the dealer dragged their feet as well), and I was told to bring in my bike for the service manager's inspection.
My initial claim was milky paint evident on the (crimson) black portion of both saddlebags, but again, after inspecting my paint, I felt it existed on other parts. I told the service manager that I was not trying to be (overly) selfish or greedy, but since we had the factory's attention, let's look at this bike closely and determine if other painted parts are in need of replacement.
The manager (a pretty sharp guy who has seen this before) agreed completely. After inspection, it was determined that the saddlebags (sans lids), the tank, the front fairing and front fender are all in need of replacement.
How cool is that? I'm just trying to be honest and forthright, and I get the same back. Moreover, this inspection was done with my input (and eyes) as well.
As I've said, the manager has seen this before (and had painted parts replaced). He told me that the root of the problem with this particular paint scheme (the crimson black part) lay in an excessive amount of clear coat applied on the defective parts, thereby rendering them more brown than black in appearance. He said that on his other (FLHTCUSE crimson black) claim, the MoCo replied, asking that he color sand the affected parts, to which he replied, "we are not a body shop." So the parts were replaced.
He said that the factory typically uses a thick clear coat, so that when debris hits the part, often times the offending area can be color sanded, and that when they applied the color coat on these parts, somebody went a little overboard.
The moral of this story is that without the excellent information available from the conscientious members of this site,  I would not have even known that paint problems exist with other owners' bikes, nor even that the MoCo will make good on it if an owner such as myself puts in a claim.
Now, I know that the new parts can be flawed as well (improper packaging, damage during transit, etc., I've already seen this movie), so I'm not out of the woods yet. Nonetheless, I'm extremely grateful for this website, and the amazingly wonderful information imparted by you, the members.
Thanks,
ICMC Geezer

ICMC, glad to hear you are getting your parts.

I doubt I would have known to get mine replaced without the site as well.  I knew they looked bad and it was the info here that confirmed it.

Let us know how the parts come in.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Even with the flawed paint you get compliments on the paint. But I, being the one who deatils it, see it everytime I look at it.

True... I expect that would be a personal and case by case decision. Depends how tired of the fight you get. I know I finally just decided to take the right saddlebag with the bleed thru in 3 places and get on with it. The fight can become all consuming but that's to be expected when you have as deep a passion for your ride as many of us have. Some will just trade it or sell it. Some are not in that position since they sunk all their hard earned bucks into getting the bike in the 1st place and can't afford to sell or trade and get another bike.
Good luck to all.  :2vrolijk_21:

G...when did you get your bike?  It depends on when it was produced as to the whether you have problems.  I don't think the bike's produced toward the end of the model year had problems.  Mine was built in May and it's fine..

If you live near a member that has it they could show you the difference.  Basically get a bright light and shine it wear your inner fairing meets the outer fairing.  They should both be black and have the crimson flakes showing.

Same goes for the melon, but it will appear a dark brown under BRIGHT artificial light or sunlight with green flakes showing.  The melon appears to be the most dynamic of the three color combinations in that the Emerald Black portion can appear black, dark brown..........or whatever depending on how the light hits it.  It is pretty cool.  As for paint issues, it has the same problems as the BCC/CS in that striped paint done early in production through the end of April 2006 will appear hazy, cloudy brown next to the non striped emerald black parts such as the inner fairing, rear fender, saddlebag lids and filler strips.

BB... ya got a point there. I'm thankful that I had a place to vent and the support of good people while I was dealing with this issue. I won't forget but I will move on ... and get back in the breeze. Life is too short and there's a lot more road ahead to be enjoyed. To those who may yet still be fighting this issue, you have my ear and my support. Post away!  ;)

Yup.  I agree.  Post on!  It is good therapy for the frustration generated by this mess............and a testament to those of us who are in it, or were in it that we are not alone.  I know I certainly felt better after I vented.........but nowhere near as good as I did when I got my stuff fixed.  For those of you still fighting, fight the righteous fight and don't stop until you get what you paid for.  We're behind you 100%.
